Default Analog gear and Reaper: what's the best way??

I am puzzled how Reaper works with external analog gear.

I use ReaInsert and it does the job well. But what totally surprised me is that I can turn off the analog gear and I still get signal from it as long as the cables are still connected to my interface. I tried this with three different interfaces and its all the same so it must be how Reaper handles it.

When I turn on the analog processor again the sound changed and I can change the tone so it all works. But I would totally expect no sound coming into Reaper when the processor is turned off. I tested this also without ReaInsert but just using a send to the hardware and a new track receiving input from it and the same happened: I get dry signal from a turned off unit. How is this possible?

Thanks a lot for your help, I'm lost here!

Reproduction scenario:

1. Wire analog compressor with cables to interface; interface Ins to compressor outs, interface Outs to compressor Ins
2. Create new Reaper project
3. Add one track with audio
4. Add ReaInsert to track; Send to channel routed to interface Outs, Receive from channel to interface Ins
5. Keep analog compressor physically turned off
6. Play: I hear sound from the track and the interface show signal from the Ins

Am I alone in this experience? I am so lost. Thanks for your help

Waooh, that is great!

A ghost in the machine? Or maybe it is the so called haunting
"dark matter"? You must have a veeeery fantastic magic hardware
synth!

But seriously: I don't know. I would agree that this is quite
impossible.

Ha yes I have no idea what's going on. I use analog compressors and eq's and somehow signal is received from them.

What I think is really great: Most of them post here because something
does NOT work. You're posting because something is JUST working! Although
it shouldn't - so that's ... haaha ... really unique!
