Default Not recorded in almost 10 years!!

Brand new to the forum, so hello to all. Last time I recorded was using Guitar Tracks 2 straight into my Zoom 9002 (very old now) and then my Zoom 505 then into my desktop sound card (soundblaster 32, i think) and used betamonkey drum loops for my drums. That was it and to be honest produced pretty good results at the time. Kids and work have really put things on hold and now I want to get back into recording again. I'm not lazy and will search the threads, however, would it be reasonable to think the following would be enough to start with on Reaper?

Guitar - Zoom G3XN - (some type of processor unit, this is the bit I have very limited knowledge on) - into Lenovo T430 -using beta monkey drums loops for my percussion?

Things have changed a bit and as I stated, i need to do some more research just on terminology alone by the looks of it.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome Balakina.

Start slow and steady. As said previously watch all of the Kenny videos --- skip the ones you need to and come back later. There is an absolute wealth of good stuff there.

After you've been with Reaper for a bit, you'll discover that it really isn't that hard --- especially if you ignore some of the sub menus.

Best of luck -- hope you'll share some of your musical creations with us when you feel comfortable to do it.

Regards,

The soundblaster was awesome. Back in the day when 512mb ram could run everything too!

Have you ever used the betamonkey loops? Best thing I ever came accross.

Wow! Zoom 9002 brings back some memories. Black, the size of a pack of cigarettes, with an LCD screen? It had holes that you could pass your guitar strap or belt through and have it hanging off you while you played. I played a couple of gigs with one of those twist-tied to the handle of my cheap solid state amp in the 90s. Leaning over mid-song to hit a button to change tones for the solo. Good times

Also, I'll see your Sounblaster 32 and raise you a Soundblaster Pro, playing glorious 8-bit digital sound via MS-DOS.

Back on topic, the Zoom G3xn (I have the G3n) doesn't have a USB interface to record straight into a laptop (The G5n and G5xn do). You'll need some kind of audio interface to get the signal into the laptop, or a multi-effects with a USB interface built in. What the G3xn *will* do is emulate all kinds of amps and effects pedals. I'm really enjoying mine. $0.02

Just upload to SoundCloud and post a link. There's a "Music..." sub-forum here - Reaper Music/Collaboration

Or put a link in your sig, like I do.

As Dave T mentioned, you are going to need an audio interface to get the sound into the computer. What kind of music are you planning on recording? instruments? vocals?

A good starting point for most is a 2 channel interface, headphones, and a mic for vocals. Something like a SM-57 makes a good starter mic that you won't out grow as you expand your mic collection. That, plus Reaper, is enough to get you started.

Yes thats what I figured. I really wanted to get confirmed that i could go Guitar - interface - Zoom - laptop - GREAT SOUNDS! And that for my drum loops, Reaper could import BetaMonkey, which I've since found out it could.

I first my Zoom 9002 in Northern Ireland whilst with the British Army way back in 1992-93. I still think its one of the best sounds I've ever heard.

I just tend to do instrumentals as my singing is less than below par to say the least mate. I always write though with the view that a singer could go over the top of my stuff. I put a link to my new soundcloud in an above reply. Have a listen if you like.

Balakina,

Thanks for the kind words about the BetaMonkey drum loops - glad the grooves were helpful in getting some new music written!
