Default Takes question

In Cubase when I copy an item, then paste it on top of another item, it appears on top of the item. I am then able to open "Lanes" and manipulate the audio. What's the best way to do this in Reaper?

Use case: I'm editing a live multi-track audio and video recording of a band. I'd like to replace a phrase from one chorus to another chorus section. Since there is no grid, I have to line it up manually for it to match the video. I've been doing this by adding a track above the target track, line up the phrase, delete the phrase I want to replace and then move the item down to the target track. Is there a better way?

You've got two options - legacy takes or fixed item lanes. Either will let you achieve essentially the same result.

1. Select both items (the items, not the tracks)
2. From menu, Item. Takes, Implode items across tracks into takes. You might need then to press Ctrl L to show lanes.

You can assign this command to a keyboard shortcut if you wish.

or

1. From track panel menu for first track, turn on Fixed item lanes
2. Drag and drop the second item and park it in the diagonally shaded area just below the first item.
