Default usb keyboard won't get recognized

i posted this in osx because i have a mac, but then i figured that maybe it's a compatibility issue, so i'm over here instead.
so the reaper manual says to connect the midi controller to my interface, but the interface (art tubefire) doesn't have a usb in. if i plug the usb midi keyboard into a usb port on my mac, the mac recognizes it, but in reaper, when i go to preferences_> midi devices, it is't showing up and it doesn't show up when i try to arm tracks. i've been using the virtual keyboard via my qwerty keyboard, but i'd really like to use a my midi usb keyboard. does anyone know what to do?

thanks in advance!
