"lame" Goes WHERE?
O.K. I'm stoopid.
I downloaded "lame" but I don't get what I'm supposed to put where.
The guide says, "The file should be placed in your C:\Program Files\REAPER folder. No problem.
However, what I've got is a zipped up folder w/ lot's of files in it. Exactly what am I supposed to do w/ this zipped-up folder? (can ya' tell that I didn't grow up w/ computers?).
Thanks,
R'Mad

You've probably loaded the lame source code. That won't do you any good. You only need one .dll file which you put inside the Reaper folder. Unfortunately due to legal issues the lame .dll binaries are not available from the lame developers themselves, you have to get a binary from somewhere else. I unfortunately can't remember what is the usual place to get the binary...

Get the MP3 package and place the "lame_enc.dll" in the same directory as the reaper.exe .

Here's what I've got. And by the way, I downloaded this from the site recommended in the guide: free-codecs.com.
Thanks for helping.

Hi,
Sorry to contradict you JHughes but there seems to be a lame_enc.dll file in that "lame unzipped" screenshot ReaperMadness showed here. Why not copy that one file to the reaper folder and see if it works?

Ursulon - I think I'm gonna' just try that.
It's a bit confusing hearing that I downloaded the wrong stuff, when all I did was go to where the Reaper 4 User Guide said to go and downloaded the version for my Reaper 64 bit.
But also, there was never any mention that I'd be getting a folder full of all kinds of additional files that I don't need.
Guess I'm just a lo-tech guy in a hi-tech world.
I'll keep pluggin' away at it (what else can ya' do?).
Thanks for the suggestions.
R'Mad
P.S. More confusion...
In my downloaded folder:
1. "lame" is the application.
2. "lame_enc.dll" is an application extension.
Wouldn't they both need to be "in there" for things to work properly? (just trying to figger this all out...)

We're in Business! (I THINK...)
(airon - I tried that link you provided and ended up w/ exactly what I already had... 'probably just me finding new ways of doing the wrong thing.)
I did a search and found an 8-19-2011 post from Mercado Negro.
He had provided this link: http://aegiscorp.free.fr/lame/
I went there and for the first time saw the exact file name mentioned in the user guide:
lame_enc64.dll
I'll try this as soon as I get home.
Thanks Merc!

Just to confirm that for reaper 64 bits you need lame_enc64.dll.
The lame_enc.dll only works with reaper 32 bits.

Yup! That's what I've got! (see two posts up).
Thanks for your help, ursulon.
I'm trying it out as soon as I get home (haven't hit the lotto yet...).

For 64-bit Reaper you should put the lame_enc64.dll in the folder C:\Program Files\REAPER (x64)
Just to be clear on this (and I hope I get it right)... Windows nowadays (and that means Vista/W7) comes in either 32-bit or 64-bit versions. With the 32-bit version, you can only use 32-bit applications and dll's. On 32-bit windows, Reaper installs into C:\Program Files\Reaper and it is there that you put the 32-bit lame_enc.dll.
With 64-bit windows, you can use either 32-bit or 64-bit Reaper. 32-bit reaper installs into C:\Program Files (x86)\REAPER, and it is there that you put the 32-bit lame_enc.dll. 64-bit Reaper installs into C:\Program Files\REAPER (x64), and it is here that you put the 64-bit lame_enc64.dll.

crap arbitrary cantankerous programming
Why would it be the case that for a long time I could Render to mp3 with the lame code in place, and NOW sporadically, after the Render (which works) I get a little error dialog saying that lame FAILED?
Not a big deal. Just one of the many daily examples of quirky software cluttering up in my life.

Sorry, can I just be clear after reading all of the above.
Do I need the lame .exe file and the .dll file? Isn't the .exe file a vital part of things? (I'm running 64 bit Reaper).

You need only the .dll.

Like Fabian said, you need just the .dll file.
For REAPER 64 bit, the file name mentioned in the user guide is:
lame_enc64.dll
Good Luck,

I've learned something! I thought .dll files were some kind of map that directed applications referring it to where the full program lives, but obviously it's a complete application in itself.

Yup!
They are extensions to the exe that call them.

Oops, sorry but I'm in the dark again.
Yes, I always thought they were extensions and that is why I also always thought that you had to have the .exe file on your system somewhere as well as the .dll. But then I was led to believe above that you ONLY need the .dll. After trying to get my head around that I'm then informed the .dll IS an extension so surely the .exe file needs to be on my PC somewhere?? So I've gone back to the beginning again.
So. Can someone please explain in words of one syllable for me:
Do I need to have the .dll AND the .exe file on my PC? If only the .dll then how on earth can that extension call the .exe file, or does it go onto my internet connection and look for it in the ether?
Thanks.
Flummoxed of Warwickshire.

lame indeed
Another illustration of the failure of programming to address users and meet their needs with something that you can get to work without technical expertise. Why aren't extensions PART of a program, and if they belong together why can't they find each other? Why? Because the programmer puts the burden for all that work on YOU.

To my understanding, it's Reaper.exe which calls the dll. (DLLs can contain code, data, and resources, in any combination.)
Reaper.exe replaces lame.exe in this case. If you wanted to make an mp3, you could do so using lame.exe and lame.dll and by doing some command line typing. Or, you could use Reaper and lame.dll to do the same thing but instead by clicking some buttons.
In other words, you do not need lame.exe to make an mp3 with Reaper.
