Default Reaper doesn't play at all (SOLVED)

Wether I hit space or click the play icon, it turns green but the playback doesn't move and no sound is to be heard. The play icon stays lit and the time status says [Playing].

If I use a virtual keyboard of a VSTi nothing is to be heard.

The status doesn't say that the audio device closed. This has been happening more frequent with the latest Windows and Reaper updates. The "closed audio device" issue was annoying enough, but could normally resolved by restarting Reaper. Now I'm stuck. Frustrating.

Reaper 5.80
Win 10 Pro with "Spring" update

I get that when my audio device is unavailable (but active). What does your audio setup look like? What drivers are you using? Are you running any other programs? Not fixed after reboot? No problems shown in Windows' device manager?

Fixed at reboot. Luckily otherwise I'd gone nut and/or berserk

I'm using the shippered ASIO driver for my (old) ESI U46XL. Sometimes it helps when swtiching from ASIO to one of the Windows APIs.

I know that you can try to lock a device. But I haven't figured out a way to find out which program is trying to do so. Hard to shut down the offending program then.

The last major Windows update killed my built-in mic. It's not even reported as not-working. It simply disappeared from the device manager...
