If you guys like the more analogue sounding of the synths mentioned here you really owe it to yourselves to try Admiral Quality's Poly-Ana.

The dev is somewhere in your neck of the woods lxm; this is his only synth and he seems fanatical (in as much as I would understand it) to ensure this thing has the 'hardware' vibe - without FX.

That last bit is crucial; these things have to be tried without FX to really know how well the emulation of VCO into VCF and ADSR is....

My only interest is that this guy carries on doing what he is doing - I've used the real things and am always on the look out for the same inspiring, organic sort of feel in a synth...

Oddly enough, it's not that easy to get a great digital vsti either imho... the hardware Kawai K5 and K3 and Yamaha dx7 were cheapish digital synths with processors about as powerful as a watch today, but sounded so much better than any vsti - with no FX!!

In the virtual world though, try layering (play them stacked) Poly-Ana with NI's FM8 using separate delay and chorus plugins to suit.....

u-he ACE and Zebra 2 are very awesome, too. ACE is one of the best and most analog sounding VST instruments out there.

I also forgot to mention VAZ Modular.

Yes, I've tried Zebra and Ace and they are very good (although just a little too dependent of the FX, but not as much as the others) - trouble is they are very CPU hungry; my music PC is just a core 2 duo... Ace IS brilliant vfm though! Got to be tried..

I don't have one synth that is a "go to" I have four. ACE, Alchemy, Blue and Zebra seem to end up in most stuff I do, in one combination or another. I've got a bunch of others but they don't get much use. Learning how to create the sounds I need has really slowed my appetite for buying new stuff. And that group of four covers a lot of ground.

With that said, I am still adding Omnisphere to the stable one/some day, I'm sure.

Default It All depends on...

It really depends on the purpose of making your music.

If you want to have fun making the music then you use the synths that truly inspire your creativity.
If you want to be taken seriously, then go with popular synths.
It is the same as DAWS- You use the popular brands such as --- ----- to be taken seriously and anything else is used for inspiration (Maybe that is why we hang around in this forum)

Well, I personally go for the M1 and Wavestation Synths in almost all of my recordings. Sometimes when I want to pop things up a bit I go for the Monopoly and Legacy Cell. The legacy Collection has solid sounds and they don't come with musch as the more popular brands.

I actually like Garage Band also. The Piano is one of the best sounding pianos
Rem** it it not hte tool but the user **

Most of my music M1 and Wavestation + Garage Band

Ace can eat my core duo for a snack. I'm on the hunt for an all around synth that sounds really good, and I think Ace is the best that I've heard. Maybe Reaper's new freeze function will make it manageable.

Another core eater that sounds good, is easy to use, made by u-he and actually free is TyrellN6. It's not as good or flexible as Ace, but that doesn't mean that it isn't. After removing some daft crud from the presets I can see myself using it from time to time.

Hello Blastrio,
With all due respect, why is synth1 such a great synth (in your opinion)? I hear alot of people praising synth1 but I've downloaded it and it really didn't impress me, except the fact that it's very cpu light, am I missing something? I haven't used a lot of freeware synths but I think crystal has impressed me the most. To be honest I guess that I really can't judge synth1 too critically because I haven't tried to create any patches, I've only went thru the presets.

ACE is completely different in scope than M/P and MS-20. I still love the sound of Korg's plugins. ACE is a totally different beast. I love how Korg's plugins aren't CPU hogs, for example

OK, I'm not a synth guy. For 90% of my stuff I use samples BUT... when I need synths I usually reach for Oatmeal, Zebra CM, Synth1, MinimogueVA, SQ8L or M1 LE. These will usually get me the sounds I'm after.

As mentioned earlier in this thread I also just got Big Tick Rhino which is actually far too advanced for me but it does sound good. I'm one of those guys that look for good presets first and foremost so take my opinion on this topic with a grain of salt

Although I have NI Komplete, the synth I get the most inspiration out of is Tone2's Gladiator 2.

Well, Rhino is the first synth (and probably only) I've really learned properly. It's really not that complicated. The envelopes had me scratching my head but once I understood them I really "got" the whole envelope thing. Before I just sort of dialed in until it sounded the way I wanted--with any synth. Now I find when turning to other synths that just have regular knobs that they're convoluted. Odd, huh? I did take some time with the manual. Rhino still looks awful compared to other synths but I love it.

I'm trying hard to stick to Absynth 5, like the OP I think it's better to learn one tool well. I'm a metal guy but I love throwing in arpeggiated lead sounds and pads, very dirty leads, piky basses etc. So far I've found close to what I need in Absynth's presets, then tweak from there.

But I know I'll probably yield to temptation and start amassing synths like everyone. (I know it because I now have 8 guitars when I very clearly only need 2!)

It will soon be three years since the guys at Sylenth have bothered to add anything at all to their website. This alone would make me reluctant to get involved with their product -- which I think is one of the best synths on the planet.

They also don't respond to emails --- so all of this doesn't instil
confidence.

It is a real shame.

Tough question, but I tend to use Korg Legacy, Synth1 and Helga a lot.

But when I really need a good pad, I still have a Roland JD-800 which never lets me down in that department.

I also still have a Crumar Bit 99. I used to use it a lot for bass sounds. There's this one default patch that need very little tweeking which gives a really good nice and round bass. I haven't been able to replicate that with any VST so far.

also love Absynth - and yeah, so much more than pads. Such a deep synth.
ACE
xoxos stuff - i keep going back to these for weird ass sounds. His stuff is great and really left of centre.

I have (bought)Z3ta+ 1, Rapture, Alchemy, Ace, Twin 2, Toxic Biohazard (free) Tal NoiseMaker, Tal Elek7Ro-II, Synth1, Oatmeal & TyrellN6.

The most used favourites would be:
1) Ace
2) Alchemy
3) Rapture
4) Twin 2

If you could only use free, you really couldn't go wrong with:
1) Tal NoiseMaker
2) Synth 1
3) Oatmeal
4) TyrellN6

If you really pushed me to choose one synth to do it all it would have to be Alchemy. It'll do anything form multi dimensional soundscape PADs, hard n heavy Dubstep Bass to more acoustic sounds. All thanks to it also being a pretty excellent sampler too.

I am taking a stab at some electronica and looking around at various synths.

I have the NI stuff, but I looked around at other free ones as well.

I just keep going back to Massive for its tweakability, especially those macro buttons.

I also like Absynth for a few unique things.

I tried Synth1, but just couldn't pull what I wanted out of it.

However, I love that Rez synth.

SQL8 is fun for its ease of use, just not real tweakable.

Almost forgot,
The Korg M1 LE really does have some nice sounds and features.

My SY77 is probably the most used but I tend to write on the rig below as a whole most of the time (as seen in this video clip recorded live with REAPER in my studio).

IK SampleTank has been my most frequently used soft synth/sampler solution so far but I've just purchased Native Instruments Komplete 8 and am eagerly waiting for the box to arrive. I dare say that will get plenty of use as a soft synth collection shortly.

In the pic below:
Roland Juno6
Roland System 100
Roland System 700 sequencer
Roland SH-09
Yamaha DX7
Yamaha SY77
Yamaha TX802 (hidden beside the Hammond & behind my nylon string)
Yamaha KX-8
Hammond organ & Leslie
Frostwave Midi-CV converter
Zoom 9150 tube preamp
& my guitars
