Writing or reading sequentially to/from SD cards is the highest performance you'll see. As soon as you do random reads/writes, between the specific SD card's performance and the SD port interface's limitations, performance can drop to that of a 4200rpm spinning drive or worse.
Try it. If it works... then we're done here. If not, don't be surprised. It's quick to just copy the files to your SSD workspace and simply have max performance no matter how high the resolution of the audio and no matter how much editing and/or seeking you're doing. Probably simplest to just do that to ensure getting the performance you set up your computer to have.
Use the SD cards and USB connected drives for convenience but don't expect max performance or spend time chasing that.
