Maybe it would be better to have a native action for this?
And what is the difference between this thread and this:

One creates a single Automation Item the size of the RE.

The other creates MANY automation items Inside The RE, one for every grid division.

I made the graphic to show the difference.

For the record, I find that REAPER never goes that extra step to create native functionality for its features with an emphasis on creativity / workflow.. So many little actions are missing that could drive Automation Items as being Reaper's hot feature, but no time was spent honing in how they might be used by a producer/creator.

Agreed 100%. AI's could be so powerful if the devs wouldn't abandon them, because sadly it looks like so

It is because there is no fresh blood. When one guy joined the team, he wanted to implement a lot of cool features, but very soon he left to a company in other area.

Unfortunate because it wouldn't take that much effort! It's all just little stuff, bouncing ideas off the creators in the community, seeing how people might want to use the features!

Would love to be able to "paint" automation items, ie hold a hotkey and it creates an AI under your mouse at the grid divisions - drag and it "paints" them. Easy to imagine using this on a filter for "stepped" filtering.

Would love to use AI in the MIDI Editor.

Would love "AI Presets" with useful shapes (ramps, sin wave, triangle wave etc) inside a "AI Palette" that you either click or drag onto the lane -- even better, assign shortcuts to "paint them" in.

Etc etc etc etc etc. All pretty simple stuff given that scripters are doing it

I would love to have all of the above, but even more simple stuff is missing. Like AIs don't even have a left click context in mouse modifiers. So no way to left click and split normally an ai just like you would do with an item. Yes you can with RE or double click, but this is not consistent at all with the rest workflow.
Also move contents relative to the grid, can't believe it's still missing.
