The script automatically manages the audio file and deletes the old when it is altered. I think that's a pretty minor concession to make rather than demanding a purist approach of rendering the audio again every time the container item is played. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the devs just made a render to play from RAM in a native implementation.

Bitwig has these kind of audio item containers (but not pooled/linked unfortunately), and as far as I can tell, they don't produce any files on disk.

But like I said, it's a good workaround. If you pull this off, I'll happily use it.

I inherited an incomplete script that already had the pooling – and nested pooled items! – nailed down. It was just missing basically everything else

Well, if you take a look, you see: Every DAW has this
possibility - Cubase Parts, Logic Folders etc. ...

The benefit of audio boxes isn't just only about
repetitive structures - though that is most important
in music composition - see here .

No, another advantage is that you can assemble and
construct songs or audio passages hierarchically and
modularly. This is a big step - like the step from a
tape-machine to a DAW. User "Joystick" has described
this well here: click me.

Thanks enroe. There are so many threads. If you like my script, hopefully you'll help me track down all the threads to link to the release announcement thread I'll create after the beta gets tested some more.

The musician "voidhead" brings in some interesting
aspects:

The Source is here

The beautiful phrase "being able to fluidly experiment with the
arrangement of the song and to combine different phrases
"
shows that all kinds of "rearrangement" are meant.
This means not only simple copying of song parts, but also pool
copying of song parts: How does this guitar riff sound when I put
the same bass underneath? How does this sequence of chorus
rhythms sound? etc.

Unfortunately, this is not possible with Reaper - because there's no
"audio box".

I have created my version of this feature in ReaScript: it's called Superglue. Check it out here.
