Default Choosing reference songs - I'm just learning and having trouble deciding what to use

I am in the process of learning how to decide on what reference songs to pick to help me with my mixing and could use some advice on how to start to learn how to decide what I should use.

In my case, I am a singer. I sing songs by artist like

Bette Midler:
-Wind Beneath My Wings
-From A Distance

Barbra Streisand:

-People
-Evergreen
-Send In The Clowns
-Somewhere
-The Way We Were

Joe Cocker:
-You Are So Beautiful

I'd appreciate some suggestions of refernce songs to consider as well as in light of the kind of music I sing to learn how to decide on my own which ones to consider usuing.

With Gratitude,

Steven

Hi Steven, if you sing anything like these folks, then you must be pretty good.

I've often looked for songs like this and there are quite a few out there. The biggest problem I find is that they are usually smothered in reverb which for me, makes them less usable.

Whitney Houston has a lot of stuff on the net that's not too bad. Here again though, a lot of them are live, so they don't have that studio quality.

Names like Billy Ocean, Michael Bolton, Toni Braxton, these are just a few of the many really good singers out there.

Good luck Steven, if you find some good stuff, post it here.
