Default Area Selection and Grouped Items: what should happen?

There is inconsistent behavior when working with grouped items and AS vs TS.

See the gif:

As you see, actions applied to an item of a group, that is inside a TS, are applied to all items of the group. But the same does not happen for actions that are applied to a grouped item that has an AS.

Do you think AS should or not take into account items that are grouped?

I am not sure. Maybe it is fine as it is. But I would like to have an action that would automatically add area selections to all grouped items, like this:

What do you think?

At the moment, Area Selection just removes any cut or copied items from any group, which is logical. What I might expect to find is a checkbox on the Grouping matrix so that individual groups could have an 'AS group lock' option or something.

In the future, using this dedicated thread for area selection discussion would be nice...

It exists for a reason...

I wonder why there's no longer the pre-release board "rules" as a sticky... hmm

That's a good question. And what to do with stretching?

I'd like to see modes where area selection respects
1. Grouped Tracks
2. Tracks in a folder

I never use grouped items

So in this mode when you drag to create an AS on one track, an AS is created on the others.

Ah, so a little similar to Pro Tools (track) edit groups?
That would be nice.

Edit Groups is the thing I miss the most from Pro-Tools. It is SO powerful!

Anyway, there should be an action or a mode to automatically create area selections for grouped items. But of course, this won't replace the need for Edit Groups, which is another feature altogether.

Mirror AS to all tracks in group or maybe all tracks (and children tracks) in folder, would be very usefull for dialog editing or drums editing.

I wish there was a way to group envelopes for multi tracks.
I think this request had it covered.
https://forum.cockos.com/project.php?issueid=843

Note: That issue tracker was depreciated, but I'm glad they left it up for historic reasons.

For built-in envelopes (Volume, Pan etc), this is a no-brainer and is what makes ProTools incredible for mixing.

For plugin parameters, there's of course no guarantee that the grouped tracks will have the same plugins, and therefore this whole methodology kind of goes out the window.

The reasonable compromise would be to allow Multiple (Specific) Selections to be editable together.

ie, you want to trim the Filter Cutoff and Volume of two different tracks at the same time -- select the area in each of those lanes, and Trim.

I think the next big FR after Area Selection that the devs should consider implementing are track edit groups. But this thread is not about requesting that FR, which has been requested hundrends of times elsewhere in the forum. It is about what should happen with the current "grouped items" implementation and the new AS.

Possible solutions are:
- an action that mirrors the AS of one item to all the items in the same group
- an action that does it automatically, similar to "Options: Selecting one grouped item selects group" ---> "Options: Area Selection of one grouped item is mirrored to all items in the group"
