Default how to add virtual drum track?

i'm pretty darn new to recording/reaper. i've done one multi-track song so far w vocals, harmony, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, mandolin, bass, and banjo. i use a mackie onyx 2x2 blackjack as an interface, which can accommodate mics and DI input.

how might i add virtual drums? is there a way to trigger a snare or hi hat , etc, as an add-on track to the song?

any input would be helpful. simpler the better

thx

the song is on soundcloud if interested: https://soundcloud.com/mtcutty/old-love-letters

nice song

there are a ton [or three] of ways to add drums

Personally I'd suggest getting the free download of XLN Audio Addictive Drums demo... which gives your a few sounds to try...

Or you can look into Reasamplematic that is included with reaper and get yourself some drum sample wav files to load into it... there are many free drum samples on the net.

Or Toontrack EZDrummer, or one of the free Drum Synths you can find on KVR Audio.com

I use EZdrummer all the time. It's way too easy not to.

Did you record your song with a click track? Because adding a virtual drummer last is a bit trickier than adding it first as your tempo will vary a little, while your virtual drummer is going to keep perfect time.

If you recorded that in time mode, you will want to set up tempo maps so EZDrummer can find the down beat at the same time you do.

thx for input.

i found addictive drummer (demo), and was able to insert it into a dummy song. it created a bunch of tracks - kick, high hat, toms, etc all separately, along with a master drum track and one just titled addictive drums.

i can trigger the sounds with my mouse (with latency), but was unable to record any of those sounds onto the song. i tried arming various of the drums tracks, but no recording. how do i actually get these drum sounds from the demo recorded?

as far as having a click track - i didn't use a click track (not sure how yet!) i was hoping i could simply add these sounds on top of an already recorded song. perhaps in the future i could explore starting with a click track.

thx again

i'm getting closer....in case it helps anyone else, i was able to load addictive drummer demo as an Fx onto a new track, select reaper midi keyboard as input device, and record the drums, triggering w my computers keyboard. i initially had latency problems related to the driver selected (wasn't using my mackie/ASIO), so i switched drivers and that largely resolved the latency problem. enough to get started with!

here's a couple of links that helped me work through it:

If you're playing the MIDI drum live along with the track, you should be OK. If you're trying to add a pre-packaged MIDI drum track, that is when you'll want to investigate tempo maps.

You'll want to investigate those at some point, anyway, but if you're working, keep working!

I will second what Jerome is saying. STARTING with a click track will make adding MIDI drums later a lot easier. My master template is setup to open with a click track..a closed high hat which I set to the tempo I want then play along to.

i'm going to try to do my next song (my second) with a click track to start with - i have figured out how to place the click track and alter the tempo.

how do i change the click sound to the closed high hat? that sounds like a great idea. thx

i was able to find some help on another post, regarding changing click sounds.

here's the info that helped:

Video on using the "Insert->Click Source" item properties to modify the metronome sound:

Download alternate metronome sounds from this thread:
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=39602

thx for the suggestion - i found some rim shots that sound clean and helpful
