Default Quantize All then Remove Some

I have a drum track that I want to quantize and then remove the quantization from select measures where the quantizing would make it feel too stiff (mostly fills). Is there a simple way to do this?

The tracks are midi - played in as a live performance using pads and a VST.

Thanks!

There are a couple of Kenny videos where he talks about this, but using audio instead of MIDI. Might be of use to you if you were to convert your MIDI to audio somewhere down the line:

There isn't a way to do this with midi?

Quantize has a bypass function - just tick this for the selected notes you want to un-quantize (after pressing Q to get the quantize options)

Does that then leave all the other (not selected) notes quantized? How can you tell which is which aside from the obvious? For some reason Reaper’s version of non-destructive quantize in midi editor freaks me out. I do not understand how it works and cannot get consistent results. Spoze I should go look at some vids...

well quantize can be set to operate on all notes or just selected notes, eh?

so you can do it a couple ways as to what the OP wanted.

he could dupe the midi items and in one of them have only the notes he wants to quantize and in the other the notes he does not

or he could just have all the notes in one item and select the ones to quantize.... depending on the notes one way might be easier than the other.
He could also split the item into quantize and not quantize items

Watched Kenny’s video on quantizing. There’s an action to unquantize selected notes which is pretty much like bypassing the Q for certain notes. Only works if you haven’t committed the Q.

I usually select all (or I do it section by section if there are many notes that shouldn't be quantized like many rolls for instance), then unselect these notes that I don't want to quantize, and then hit Q.

It can be very confusing. Has been for me as well.

The best way I can explain it is that nothing gets committed unless you actually hit "commit" in the quantize dialog.

So there's 2 possible states. Quantized or Un-quantized (bypassed).

So you can always bypass anything selected or re-quantize things at any point. It always points back to the original performance. So it never stacks quantize on top of previous quantize.

So you can bypass at any time or re-quantize and it will always apply what you're currently adding to the original performance.

What makes this all confusing is that each not can be quantized completely different. And unless you do it again, it's hard to know what has already been quantized.

Hope that helps a bit.

De-necrotizing just to write,

"with so many people requiring midi drum editing features involving different quantizing procedures, it's amazing nobody has seen fit to make a simple plugin or utility to streamline and de-glitch this process".
