The latency comes from the buffer size and the amount of buffers. If I understand correctly, in some situations Reaper will automatically set the amount of buffers.
If you have plugins that cause latency, your overall latency will be partly determined by them. This is the more propable cause.
A few examples on the buffer sizes:
- Über-Pro = 32
- Lowest my MacBook's internal can handle well = 64
- Guitar amp sims are still playable = 128
- Reasonable compromise = 512
- Mix very large projects = 1024
- Overly neuroticly safe = 2048
Try and use a value that you find suitable for you and your equipment. Older gear can't go below 256, and I play guitar amp sim with 48 or 64.
