From memory, Readrums is a template rather than a plugin.
Save it to Documents and Settings/Username/Application Data/Reaper/TrackTemplates. Then to load it use Track/Insert Track From Template

Yes, Alistair has it right. It is a template of eight samplers, mapped chromatically from C1/36 (but you can map them any way you like, and use as many samplers as you like as well). Call it up from a right-click, then simply drag drum hits straight in from the Media Explorer. :-)
You can now also make custom drum maps for it with Schwa's awesome Midi Note Namer plugin:
http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9640
Works like a charm, and not just for ReaDrums of course...
Thanks for checking it out - HTH!

Drag the drum samples directly from the explorer into one of the Samplomatics. Play or click in your beats to the midi editor. The note nammer is just to make a map of what drums are on which keys in the midi editor (use "show named notes" not "piano roll" view).
Can't remember the specifics of Teej's example, but HTH!

Jukes, you should look through the "Info" thread linked in my signature. There's a lot of info there!
Here's a brief step-by-step:
1) Assuming you've put ReaDrums in the proper Templates folder, call it up from a right-click.
2) You will see eight stacked Samplomatics (Reaper's native sampler). The top one is labeled "Kick" and is assigned to note 36 (C1). Navigate to a kick drum sample in Media Explorer. You can preview them this way.
3) When you find one, simply drag it right into the big black box on the Kick Samplomatic. Now if you play C1 on a midi controller (assuming your track is properly armed), or click on slot 36 in the Midi Editor (after creating a Midi Item on the ReaDrums track), you will hear the kick sample played.
4) Finally, either play a rhythm with the track armed to record, or else mouse click in a kick rhythm in the Midi Editor on slot 36. Repeat as needed with the other Samplers.
This should get you there, I would worry about getting this all together before taking on Schwa's Note Namer. That can be a bit tricky to figure out; took me a while, and I like to think I know what I'm doing with this stuff! lol

Hiya Jamester,
Like Jukes I'm an old guy why plays keys/bass but is new to drums/recording. I can get to mid way in step #2 above. The problem is I can't find drum samples. Were any included with Reaper D/L, or do I need to go somewhere else and d/l them? I'm confident I can be in business if I can just find the samples...
Using Line 6 KB37 as audio/MIDI I/F - all else seems to be working fine.
Many Thanks,
Retarius

Got a little further...
Well, I downloaded some .wav drum samples from the freesound site, and matched them with each of the 8 Reasamp slots as directed.
The new problem is when I play them, I can find the keyboard notes that correspond with each of the 8 drum sounds (good). However, when I play each of those notes, I also get the tone of an acoustic grand piano! Doesn't matter whether I use the KB37 external keyboard or the Reaper virtual MIDI keyboard. Also, the piano tones sound for any note played, not just the 8 keys that are mapped to the drumkit.
So the question is how do I un-assign the acoustic piano sound to the keyboard?
Thanks,
Retarius

Retarius:
1) Yeah, the actual drum samples are up to you, no "content" is supplied with reaper in this way. The good news is there are TONS of free (and legal!) drum samples all over these internets; a little digging can go a long way, from real drums to every drum machine ever made! If you need help, I can dig up some links for you...
2) Hmm, I'm assuming you don't actually have a piano vst loaded in your project as well? If not, perhaps you are using a built-in soundcard, and it is triggering its own MIDI samples. You might do some digging and make sure only Reaper is accesing your soundcard when you are using it.
HTH! :-)

On the hunt!
Jamester,
Many thanks. On item #2, I have a feeling you are in the right ballpark. I have a Creative Labs SB live crappy soundcard, and I may very well be using it as an output as well so that MIDI is directed to it. I'm going to try some experiments in this area now. Thanks for the suggestions!

Nother noob readrums question for you all.
I loaded teej's "readrums lite" track template, and it worked fine, and I dragged a bunch of different samples onto the samplomatic instances, saved the project as readrums-1.rpp, and then saved each samplomatic instance as a preset, and closed the project.
Upon reopening, none of the samples load into Samplomatic and when I then opened the presets the settings re-loaded but no samples loaded. I then moved some of the samples that were supposed to be loading into the same folder as the project, closed and then re-opened Reaper and still they all have to be loaded one at a time.
Am I missing something? Teej's readrums lite track template wasn't like that. Do I need to save as a track template for it to work or what, if you know?
Thanks for your time. frog

You can save the ReaDrums kit by grouping all the Samplomatics into a track folder, then - making sure that everything is selected/highlighted, save the whole thing as a track preset.
I don't remember what Teej's template was, but by either saving the entire project or saving the samplers in a folder as noted above, the samples certainly should reload no problem. Don't move the samples after you save though, because then Reaper won't be able to find them next time you try to call it up.
HTH!

Yeah thanks Jamester. Not working. Don't know what I'm doing wrong but the samples are not saving with the track templates, or the projects.
I started out with ReaDrums.RTrackTemplate and added one midi monitor program, asmidimon, and then deleted all but 9 samplomatics, renamed all remaining instances to names I could more easily recognize. Then I dragged samples onto them from media explorer, changed the midi note for each one and changed the audio channel they sent to for a few. It all worked with my input device. So then I saved the project, saved all tracks to a template, and then closed Reaper. I then load the project or template and everything but the samples are loaded.
If anybody has an idea what's wrong pls let me know. I'm going to try not renaming the samplomatics and see if that helps, and then if that doesn't work I'm going to just drink Christmas wine and say hell with it.
Cheers, frog

I am no BUMPing myself having recovered from the Christmas wine.
Reaper's Samplomatic doesn't re-load with samples after being saved in a project or as part of a track template. Samples have not been moved. Anybody know why? Or is this just normal?

feature request
it should copy the samples and preset but it don't.
i think that it should when you choose
copy all media into project directory.
but then the move all media choice would destroy your sample library.
maybe a choice to "bundle project" that places samples from samplematic, presets, VST's, and other effects that are not included in the reaper core into a bundled project directory or zipped.
then reaper could look to the project directory first for those items.

I just made a discovery. I have Reaper on 2 machines, and this is only happening on my Win XP computer. Samplomatic is working properly on my W2K box, just from a quick look (I don't use that box for music very often). The XP box also has several large applications on it that the 2000 box doesn't, including Audition 3, Sonar 6, and Office XP. Does this raise any kind of flag for anybody? I'm actually new to XP and I've stuck with W2K for all these years.
And to re-summarize, the problem is, Samplomatic will either not save, or not reopen with its samples last saved, and the "Mode" dropdown box reverts to "Note (Semitone shifted)" instead of "Sample (Ignore MIDI note)." All the other params of samplomatic are saved properly I think. It appears nobody else is having this problem.
Is Windows doing this and I've not configured something correctly? If anybody has any suggestion why I can't get Samplomatic to save or load correctly on just this machine I'd sure appreciate it.

OK sorry for all the fuss. I don't know XP very well. It's XP's firewall. I think I got it working now, I just shut down the firewall. Thanks and sorry for the fuss. Happy New Year! Jamester, I'll be camping in the woods in VA for New Year, and I'll surely drink a toast to you. Cheers, frog

Hey, just a quick update. I am pretty satisfied with REadrums now that I figured out what my simple problem was. I had been using DK+ and I think now I'll try to stay with ReaDrums at least for now. Seems more intuitive to me, and Reaper doesn't completely agree with DK+'s GUI. So thanks everybody who made it possible!
