There are bands from Brazil that perform and record with surdos or alfaias (both traditional fairly bassy drums), bass guitar and also a drum kit with a kick drum. How can you mix all these together so that they don't make a muddy mess? Here's an example of drum kit, bass and surdos all playing together:

For mixing bass guitar and kick drum there is the old trick of side-chaining the kick drum to a compressor on the bass, but this works because the kick drum generally has a short decay. Surdos and (to some extent) alfaias sound for longer, so side-chaining them to the bass would be a bit odd, wouldn't it? How should I go about doing this?
