A VPS is a virtual server, allowing you to install whatever pleases you. It's like a real hardware box, only virtualised. Real hardware starts at around 100$/month. VPSes start from next to nothing, fi on AWS (Amazon Web Services), Azure or Google compute. Most webhosters also offer VPSes.
