Default iMac has no audio

I am a complete novice. I have just downloaded Reaper. I am using an iMac with OS 10.13.3. I only have the default audio input and output. I have no external input or output devices. The only MIDI drivers that show up are Bluetooth, Network and IAC grayed-out.

I have exported a MIDI file from music notation software (MuseScore) and imported it to Reaper. I can see the file is in it's proper channels and that it plays. The sound registers in the channel controls as it plays but I am getting no audio at all. All I want to do for now is play with the instrumentation and effects on the computer and have it play through the computer speakers.

I appreciate any help. Thank you.

You need to have a software instrument inserted in the track's fx to be able to hear MIDI playing.

In REAPER, there is ReaSynth that will work, but probably won't sound how you envision the music. But, first put that in the fx of the track to prove that sound will come out of REAPER.

To have more instruments at your disposal, you will have to download and install some, but there are a lot of good free ones available.

Here is a video explaining how to insert a software instrument (also known as virtual instrument) in REAPER, and the basics of ReaSynth:

Welcome to the Reaper Forums!

Make sure to check out the User Guide (https://www.reaper.fm/userguide.php) and the Videos section (https://www.reaper.fm/videos.php) in general.

Do you already have an instrument plugin loaded on the Track in order to generate Audio from the MIDI file? https://www.reaper.fm/videos.php#ztr7B-PrUHY

You can find a list of free instrument plugins, for instance, here: http://bigcatlists.blogspot.co.at/

MIDI is not audio. You will need a MIDI instrument plugin (VSTi) to feed the MIDI data into and generate audio from it.

But I'm an audio guy. One of the MIDI guys can give you a step by step if needed.
