Default Using another DAW inside Reaper for MIDI drum editing/programming

I saw some old threads in which people were using FL Studio inside of Reaper for this purpose, as the note mapping process in Reaper was, and still is, somewhat cumbersome.

I'm looking for some up to date thoughts on this. Which relatively inexpensive Windows DAWs work well for this application?

I do have a licence for Cubase AI 10 Elements that came bundled with my interface, but have no idea if it could be used this way.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT for clarification:

I use Superior Drummer to get my drum sounds. I'll point to these two threads to explain what I refer to as cumbersome drum mapping. (And, yes, there is a work-around but it, too, is cumbersome.)

The idea would be to use, say FL Studio, as a VSTi inside Reaper and, then, use FL's MIDI editor for drum parts which, I gather, is easier to use for this purpose.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by MIDI drum editing/programming?

Do you mean using an entire separate DAW just as a sampler?

I use Maschine inside of REAPER, and works well. But that is specifically designed to run standalone or as a plugin. And so you can directly drag loops that you create into the timeline too.

In all honesty, i don't find the piano roll too bad in REAPER for drum editing as it is. The trick to most drum programming is to get the quantization how you like it (i.e. in regards to applying grooves/swing).

There's also step editors that run inside REAPER, i.e. Megababy.

I think integrating another DAW into the workflow would eventually overcomplicate the setup rather than learning to use the MIDI editor in REAPER better perhaps? Because you'd need to start using virtual MIDI cables/rewire to transfer between software (Unless it can operate as a plugin like Maschine).

Apologies if I was unclear. Please see my edit in post 1 for clarification.
Thanks.

I've used FL Studio a bit as a VSTi within REAPER. It works.

Are you familiar with FL's MIDI drum mapping options? I'm doing some digging around the webz but these forums are such a wealth of info that I thought I'd ask here.

No, I need to dive into it more when I have time. Been mixing mostly as of late so I haven't had the occasion to figure it out.
