Default Can't change item color

Any other item already in or that is added to this project is changeable. The one that's there is not. Tried everything.

Here's an example... see if you can get it to change color:

I've downloaded your sample file and checked. The wave file is missing of course, but I'm able to change take color by right click, item & take colors, set active take to custom color ...

The wave is in the zip under the Audio sub directory - 58-ldvox-200717_1837.wav ... I've tried it on a totally different machine. The RPP should open that - does for me.

Yea - as I mentioned you can change any other take colors in that project.

BUT I figured out what happened. The options in Reaper on the machine that recorded it had Pref > Peaks/Waveforms > Automatically color any recording pass that adds new takes to existing media items.

If you use that - even trying after exploding takes (in place or to tracks) you cannot ever change it again. It's as tho some attribute gets suck with whatever color Reaper's Autocolor take thing used. That kinda sucks.

My installation has that shut off. But the person that did the session had it one. So now I'm stuck with some funky purple crap that's hard to deal with when using peaks with spectrum coloring on.

@nicholas: You need to extract the zip to see/load the wav file.

@ajawamnet: Following Nicholas' instruction (above post) I can change colors on the purple wav.

I cannot. I've tried it on multiple machines. Even older reaper versions with the default theme. I installed 6.32 on a machine that never had Reaper and I still can't change the color of the item. I can ADD new items and change those, but the audio item that's already in the project - not so much. I'd write it up as some weird config issue with a particular machine, but seeing the same issue on new installations that never had reaper installed on them is strange. And as I mentioned, this problem arises from the project being recorded on a machine that had the option set for:
Pref > Peaks/Waveforms > Automatically color any recording pass that adds new takes to existing media items

What seems to be happening is this. You can't just use the:

"Right Click > Item and take color > Set items to custom color"

-like you can if you have added media without having the:

"Pref > Peaks/Waveforms > Automatically color any recording pass that adds new takes to existing media items"

-set

So with that NOT set, if you record media, you can easily change it using:
Right Click > Item and take color > Set items to custom color

But if the machine had the:

"Pref > Peaks/Waveforms > Automatically color any recording pass that adds new takes to existing media items "

then you cannot. You have to use the
"Right Click > Item and take color > Active takes to custom color" or "default color"

Again thanks for helping me figure that out. That pref for automatically setting take colors kinda sucks. I'll leave it off for now. I don't need to see a rainbow, and some of the custom colors make it hard to see what take is Active.

At least for me...
