Default Goin' 60s

Go go boots, the Watusi and all that. Faking a 60s vibe.
All me except John Luper plays the lead guitar and verby flourishes near the end.

I thoroughly enjoyed that.

The vocal delivery was spot on, and it was chock-full of nice little touches and flourishes.

Great job!

You nailed the 60's sound alright!
Great song. I think the BV's got a bit unclear in all that reverb.

This was one of the "instant songs." I picked up the acoustic and it just came out wo much thinking. I had to hurry and open Reaper before I forgot it. I've learned from not doing that in the past, thinking, "Oh, I'll remember this," but don't and the song's gone forever.

More accurate would be, they got lost in all the delay. The only actual verb is the panned plate on the left rhythm guitar. I got carried away...again.

Sounds and feels great, got that big room sound spot on.

Im surprised there's no verb. Edit] It's as you say actually delay and only on the vocals,

and verb on some of the left panned guitar parts, gives a big room sound with good clarity.

That's exactly why I prefer delays, mainly using Nembrini's free delay on this. It can still be overdone, but I think they're cleaner with the right combo of feedback and mix with the source. I only used actual verb on my guitar on the left. The keys and drums have neither.

Jeez, my brain immediately imagines one of those weird Peter Sellers movies with this playing in the background. Very 1960's sound. It's amazing how a stylistic "sound" creates such a vivid vibe.

Good one Sammy, sounds very much like the 60s, I know because I come from that era.

Also reminds me very much of the young bands I recorded in my studio throughout the 70s.

In regards to comments, I might echo Kirk concerning the lead guitar. Right now it's a little crip and cutting, lacking some of the lower frequencies (possibly around 200 to 700hrz) to round it out a little better. Ha ha, just being a little nit picky.

Good job though Sammy.

Not picky at all. You should have heard it before I tried fattening it up (it wasn't DI, so I didn't amp it or anything). Looks like I could have gone even further, but it would basically be trying to put frequencies in place that didn't exist on the original sound. The quality of John's playing shined through, but the lead tone was *extremely* bright and lacking low end. I think he was just trying to go with the "era."

I think that bass guitar needs to be smashed into submission so that it actually fits the relative dynamic of the piece. It could probably be played a little better, but it really does kind of jump around. That big wonky slide around :30 is pretty cool, but it almost sounds like it's a part of another recording. From that point, it sounds like the bass is just altogether too loud for the next minute or so. Then it's just literally all over for the rest of the song. I certainly dig what you're shooting for there, but it's just not really getting it.

Honestly, I think that bass needs pushed back into the space a bit more, too. It's like the bass amp is right in front of me and the rest of the band is across the room through the PA with a bunch of FX.

Thanks man. I'll try taming that bass this weekend. Maybe that will make help the whole sound a little less disastrous.

Default Revisited

I added Kirk's lead and did a few other tweaks based on suggestions. Any better?
I THINK I tamed the bass, added an overall chamber verb, added a low organ during the lead, and other smaller stuff.
