Default block size vs. buffer size?

? How do these differ? Clearly there's two different settings... when should I alter which? For example, I had been having crackling/popping from a variety of different softsynths, so I figured I needed to increase the buffer size.. or is it the block size?

Thanks reaper pros.

In REAPER, the block size is usually identical to the buffer size. Change the setting in the audio system preferences.

Where are you seeing a separate block size setting?

Preferences -> Audio -> Device -> ASIO Driver - >

next to "Request Sample Rate" is "Request block size"

Mine defaults to unchecked (although it's not the same as the buffer size). Maybe it was when I first installed it, though.

?

Block size is unchecked by default since you usually set this in the driver control app of your audio interface, they both do the same though. I can only assume you refer to "buffer size" in Preferences->Audio->Buffering and that's about disk buffering and has nothing to do with your driver.

nope. You can see it clearly in the attached pic. As far as I can see, there is no 'block size' setting in the driver interface for my FF 400 (win 7 driver). For now I'm going to leave it alone since it is unclear to me how it is supposed to affect changes it could potentially affect. But it's still there. ; )

I think we're talking past each other here - "block size" and "buffer size" are synonymous when it comes to ASIO buffers, REAPER calls it "block size" and your driver "buffer size" (a pretty generic term that is used with all sorts of buffers). You should prefer the driver control panel of your interface to set ASIO buffer size.

I was just trying to make sure you are not talking about "buffer size" on the "Buffering" page, other than that, "block size" on the Device page and (ASIO) buffer size in your driver control app do the same thing.

Ol - I appreciate the info. However, the part that makes no sense to me is 1. why not then, call it 'driver buffer size' (naturally that's up to the discretion of devs) and 2.they do appear to have to match.. and if they don't, what happens then?

There is no "naming convention" regarding these things, drivers call it "buffer size", "block size" or simply "latency" and convert the buffer samples to milliseconds. OSX generally uses "block size", so it probably seemed more consistent for REAPER to use it in both platforms. How "block size" interacts with the driver setting depends on the driver, some driver's setting may be overridden by the prefs, others not.

In that case, I'm going to ignore it. ; )
