Default Passing keys through to main window : Undo History

Please vote!

http://forum.cockos.com/project.php?issueid=3598

Quote:
The Undo History window should pass through keys to the main app. It currently does not.

It often happens that you want to play the project immediately after clicking on the undo history window. Sometimes, when trying to locate a specific point, you can need to click-then-play more than once to find the undo point.

With the Undo History window unable to pass keys through, you need to refocus Reaper before you can play the project or otherwise interact with it.

Suggested version: as soon as practical/possible.

(There are other windows and/or dialogs that similarly don't pass keys through or do so inconsistently, but the Undo window is probably the most frustrating example of this.)

Thank you!

I guess you wanted to post this here in the FR Forum and posted on the BR forum by mistake so I moved it here. Please let me know if I made a mistake and I'll put it back to its initial place

MIDI Editor actions have the following (where Main actions do not):

Misc: Close window if not docked otherwise pass to main window (ESC assigned)
Misc: Pass through key to main window

The docked midi editor is the only docked window that does not close when it has focus and you press ESC.

If we had these in the Main actions then that would sort the problem for both docked windows and floating windows would it not?

So, for example Marah you could make a custom action to pass "play" through the undo window?

I mention actions because I'm not sure an either/or global preference will be suitable.

I voted by the way

Hey thanks Spike.

There are pass-through issues throughout Reaper. And they accumulate over time.

Some of them *seem* to be simple oversights that never get corrected. Eg, how the undo window can't pass the spacebar to start playing.

Another example: How marker navigation (using the [ and ] keys) doesn't work when ME has focus.

Very frustrating.

Perhaps we can compile a list of the biggest offenders in this regard and submit them as a 'Pass Through' FR?

EDIT: Toolbars seem to be a different species of window altogether. So maybe their not passing keys is somehow part of their DNA. But it's way frustrating. (And though I have tried to resist them, toolbars are useful.)

Well a workaround for your midi editor problem is to assign [ and ] to the midi editor action Misc: Pass through key to main window
That will work for those actions but won't work where the key you need to pass through is already being used by a midi editor action.

Of course it won't work for any other windows (such as your undo window problem) either.

A solution would be to have Misc: Pass through key to main window as an action available to all action types but that would involve the user customising all actions that they want to pass through windows. Not terribly elegant and laborious to set up but Reaper-ishly flexible.

Another solution is to have a toggle action where you can toggle on or off whether a key passes through. However you would need then to have some indication what state the toggle was in. You could have it assigned to a toolbar button which would indicate the state but then that rather negates the convenience of a single keystroke.

If there were no better solution I think I would prefer the former.

I already the 'R' key assigned to that action. It hadn't occurred to me but... doh! should have... that I can assign multiple keys to that action, which I just did to the [ and ] keys.

It's easy to forget what keystrokes are customizations, much less which are custom actions.

Indeed.

Hah! See 4.10 RC2
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=88473

Still lots of other pass-through scenarios to be fixed/optioned though.

Thanks Spike. Nice news to wake up to.

One small step for key pass-throughs, one giant leap for the Undo History.

That's great! This drives me insane when the undo history comes up and I can't get any of the other keys to work. It'll be nice when all the screens pass through.
