Peak Files Folder as subfolder in Project Folder
Dear Reapers,
What about you, maybe also wanting the option to have a "Peak Files" folder,
as a subfolder in your Project folder ?
To be honest, i really miss this feature.
I mean, when i import audio into a Project, seems logical to me that there would be a dedicated sub folder where the peak cache files for these audio items are put.
This way, when you Bring a project from computer A to B, the peak files are automatically brought along with the Project, no need to rebuild them.
This FR means: no scattering of peak files in the folder where the audio items were originated. (who wants all those peak files in their samples folders ?)
And no need for a special folder, set to be the "main peak files" folder, where ALL peak files for ALL projects are stored, which i also don't want.
Cause again, let's say i have such a folder setup on computer A.
Then i bring a Project to computer B.
Outcome:
The peakfiles were still on computer A, in that "main peak files" folder, so the peak files for the project have to be rebuild.
I know that (re)building peak files is pretty fast, but that's not the point.
A Peak Files sub folder option within Project folder would seem so logical and handy to me.

Hi. I think want you want is already possible: Preferences/Media -> "Put new peak files in peaks/ subfolder relative to media"

Nope, that puts the peaks in a subfolder relative to the media... but if you're importing media from other folders (NOT copying it), the peaks folder is relative to the source media.
He wants to have just one peaks folder under each project.

I checked Preferences/Media -> "Put new peak files in peaks/ subfolder relative to media"
Created a new project and recorded. It was still saving peaks to
C:\Users\myuser\AppData\Local\Temp\REAPEAKS
My Project Settings / Media tab has "AudioFiles" for the "path to save media files" and it does save the media there.
Then I UNCHECKED Options -> Preferences -> Paths -> Store all peak caches (.Reapeaks) in alternate path? and it works. I now get a peaks folder under my AudioFiles folder in my project.

I use one location for all peaks. So I can easily delete them. Why do you want peaks all scattered in all project folders? It doesn't seem to be needed. You don't need to backup those files with your projects. They are generated again if not found in the future.

ahh I see. Yeah I just keep em in the project and no need to regenerate them. By default aren't they all in one folder though where you can delete them ? Seems like you can do either way.

- You are working on a large Project with many audio items in your studio A.
- Then you bring that Project with you, to your studio B, to work on it there.
- When you open that Project in studio B, all peak files have to be recreated, cause
you had setup the Peak files folder to be somewhere on your computer in Studio A.
CUMBERSOME ...
IMHO, having a Peak folder in each Project folder, in where the peak files are for (only) that project, makes totally sense for me : peakfiles don't have to be re-created cause they are just in a sub folder of the project folder (that subfolder being the peak files folder).
The only way i can think of to overcome the re-creation of peakfiles when moving projects from studio A to studio B (and vice versa) is to setup a "global" peak files folder on an external harddrive.
And all your Reaper Projects should then be on that external harddrive.
That external harddrive you bring with you, moving between studio's.
It's a solution but for my situation not so ideal ..

I understand. In that case using peaks relative to media with the project would be good. But in any case. it wouldn't take much time to regenerate the peak files in computer B. And it is done in the background. Not a big issue.

Hi
Reaper user since 2005.
This issue is a huge source of frustration for me.
I have multiple projects on the go with gigs upon gigs of wavs each, running non realtime processes and being edited on any of 3 workstations, all day every day.
The amount of hours that get used up regenerating the peak files across all 3 machines for every project is a fucking nightmare! so so painful to have to wait repeatedly over and over.
The only alternative as you know is to keep peak files relative to the media, which is also a fucking nightmare because I do not need those files outside of reaper projects, it's an unnecessary mess that at times causes issues with other software. The peak files are most relevant to Reaper Projects, and that is where they should be stored. For some it may be no big issue, for me it's a huge PITA. The Peaks folder works well in PT, no one complains that Tools should spread it's peak files around elsewhere or keep them on a machine outside of a project. So yeah...
What is needed is the ability to create this.....
Reaper Project folder/
Audio folder
Peaks folder
Project backups folder!!!!!!
etc...
If the path | URL parameters in reaper config would parse variables like $projectfolder, uniformly, this would be such a quick easy problem to solve. No joke it is a huge PITA the way it is now, and not aligned with good engineering practices either, just saying.

Bumping this because it's a good request. Files used in the project would have their peak files stored in the project folder, while the rest would stay in some alternate peak folder that could get cleaned without ever deleting actually usable peak files.

the real problem is that the Directory locations don't allow $tokens like
$HOME
or
$PROJHOME
or.. whatever such stuff.
because if so, then...it'd be an easy preference setting.

it would be VERY nice to have a tick box in the preference for
"put new peak files in peaks/ subfolder relative to PROJECT"
as an alternative to :
"put new peak files in peaks/ subfolder relative to MEDIA" which is already there...
or be able to set the path in the project settings, the same as you can do for audio files

Running into frustrations with this with a shared project featuring quite large wave files in large projects.
Seems like the peak files are linked to the wave files specifically to the local computer so can't be re-used on other computers.
I can open up the project created on PC01 on PC02, but even with the reapeaks stored in the media folder, they don't appear to load on PC02; no peaks are visible when zoomed out unless I delete or remove write protection from the peaks files.
If I remove the files (or remove the write protection) they're recreated in the same place and everything works as expected.
This is normally OK, but these are large projects opened from network storage, so are pretty slow to regenerate and it would be really nice to be able to reuse them on another computer.
Are the peak files totally non-portable?

Years after original post another +1. We can have relative media and backup folder, let's have peaks too.

yes but this only works for files which you record in that project. As soon as you import or drag and drop a new file in the project, the peaks for that file gets created next to the source file...
sill hoping for this seemingly simple FR to happen

Peak Files belong to the Project - that is the only logical association IMHO.
I do not like leaving "trash" after my sessions allover the place, here and there, on this or that comp, in this or that studio... Logical and simple.
Is this really so difficult to solve since we asked for this option long time ago?
