The Ear of Dr Yes - Beuchlaic Acid (down tempo)
I've nearly finished the drum programming on this, so I feel its time to put it out there for judgment and feedback...
https://soundcloud.com/ear/beuchlaic
I'm nearly out of ideas that spring to mind on this one. Does anyone think it is 'lacking' anything or does it sound full and 'finished'? Does anything stand out as wrong?
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to listen!

Good toonage!
No idea how to pronounce the name. I know bucolic. I know butyric acid. And, OK, I know acid (Owsley's air acid being a fav 50+ years back!).
One thing with the snare...
By the time the piece was over, I was sick of that snare. A little variation in the sound from time to time would help.

I completely agree! Thanks for pointing that out, I shall fix it with my next edit. Listening back just now, it does all sound a bit thin and annoying. I shall fix it!
Marvelous
Oh, and...

I'm pronouncing Beuchlaic like Nucleic. The track has a synth line produced by a Buchla VSTi, tho musically its not very Buchla-inspired as a piece.

Just the reduction in brightness has helped loads!

Thanks! Still much to do.
I reduced the brightness, added some low end back in, upped the delay and reverb slightly, and I think what really helped, was using the wav stretching option (alt and grabbing the edge of the snare sample) and reducing the length of the snare in half.
That last point immediately gave me a nicer snare. Snappier and cleaner.

aaaaaaand another new version up...
Some extra instrumentation added, and the mix is hopefully a little more 'buttery smooth'- a bit more lounge, less aggressive
https://soundcloud.com/ear/beuchlaic
This is version RC8! Getting closer to finished!
I'm still working on the drums and making musical tweaks along the way.

Instantly made me think of the kind of soundtrack you'd hear on an early 80s Euro film that was being played at 3am on some long forgotten TV channel.
Take that as a compliment by the way, as I watched a lot of late night films as a teen.

Thanks, I'm very happy with that indeed!
And so is the disco/wah wah guitar and vibraphone I'm currently adding

New version with a few additions up. A little 'clean' guitar, some vibraphone, programmed strings instead of the sample, and singing.
The singing is a rudimentary take which needs harmonies.
Words and vocal melody courtesy of a Roger Wittaker track, a miserable dirge!

BASS TRAPS!
I am finally fulfilling a dream and giving my studio space/living room some much needed acoustic treatment via GIK Acoustics.
And here is a new version of this track -
https://soundcloud.com/ear/beuchlaic
In some ways, there is even more work to do, but I CAN NOW HEAR WHAT I'M DOING! I need to add a lot more instrumentation and finish the melody lines, but I think the basics are finally there. I'm only half way thru programming the drums, so they kinda fall apart in the second half
I think this might be my 'warmest' production to date. Very happy about where this is heading!
All feedback appreciated!

I agree with you! I like the way this is going, and I'm happy to see you back in action!
Nice to be able to hear what your working on, for sure!
And coincidental timing. I was sick of the audio quality on my main TV, so I added a really good sound bar to it yesterday. Early xmas present to myself!

Thanks! Kind words!
I always hated tv speakers, cant abide them. The TV always used to go thru the hifi instead. But then I got rid of tv in about 2001 and just started going with what I could download/stream instead
Any thoughts on what the track is screaming out for? What it needs?

Will relisten, wearing a different hat...and my headphones.
Not before tomorrow, though.
Time now for the daily walk my dogs through the national forest. I'm surrounded by forest and have a trail head at the end of my street. We average about 3 miles/day for that walk. The biggest dog is 18 pounds. Good exercise for them. Nothing flat up here at 7,000 feet!
I just use streaming services into a 4K Fire TV Stick now. The other thing that drove me to add the sound bar was Amazon Music's HD service. Niiiiice!
I should also add that I gifted myself an Ibanez Mezzo SR bass.
Merry Xmas!!!

FWIW, the earlier links to Beuchlaic Acid no longer resolve. You may want to delete them, or update the link in the OP to point to the latest version.

I like the vocal and there is something dreamlike overall that you have nailed.
Track could appear to almost shut down after 1st vocal section 1:10 ,just keep it hanging in the dreamy trippy air for a good while before returning.
Snare? doesn't sound acoustic which I like but I think a real acoustic snare sound would be right for this.
Nice deep kick and toms.
Hat could pan out slightly further, maybe? (it's not important)
That's all... please continue to do as you see fit,the way you want it, is what is best.

Thank you! I dont think I've ever nailed a sound before! I'm very happy with that!
Yes, the vocals kind of disappear. Im not sure I've finished organising the song, its structure, yet. I guess thats the arrangement? Part of the problem is the original Roger Whittaker track has terrible lyrics for the rest of the track so I dont really want to record more singing
The snare is an 808 snare. I currently working on adding a second snare, an acoustic one, to introduce when the track picks up.
I will try panning the hat more, see what I think
Thank you again for your feedback! Now I go back to work...
