I get same error with JS_API v0.985 and v0.986, so tried v0.982 (and .984) and error is gone.
With v0.985 & v0.986, both OK and state vars = nil,..
Code:
function keys()
local OK, state = reaper.JS_VKeys_GetState()
Win 7 / REAPER v5.976+dev0505

Sexan, I'm actually in the same boat. I'm a TREMENDOUS fan of everything you're doing, but it has yet to work for me haha...just watching and living through the gifs so far . There was some posting a few pages back, where people were talking about rolling back their version of JS_API with different levels of success, that might be related.

There we have it! Sexan congrats on bringing Reaper out of 1991 in regards to Selection/Copy/Paste/Delete. I mean that both cheekily and absolutely sincerely; finally we can feel confident in making project edits with this (absolutely core) tool.

I'm sure you're thinking this already, but as you are dragging the selection it probably shouldn't show the shadow copies until you've released the mouse. It's a bit confusing to see all these boxes showing up as you are trying to create a selection. The second you release the mouse though, that is amazing that you see the exact shape especially the long vertical bar showing where the selection starts!
This is great man.

Its just a showcase, it won't behave like this. It will be triggered on shortcut copy,duplicate,whatever, I was just lazy to add a shortcut . And there is something else I'm working on regarding copy/paste/duplicate I think you guys will like

Well since now we (well I ATM ) can have multiple area selections the next logical thing would be to utilize them some how right?
Make them, set one active by pressing 1-9, activate copy and copy paste like a boss... AS from now on will be in different colors and their items will be in the same color as the parent AS
And I'm not done with copy pasting yet , still "SOME" things are comming

Amazing!
Man I hope you take all these comments/suggestions with love, I think everybody's just excited and not trying to push you to do anything cause we all know how much work it is.
...but, just a suggestion lol. Is it possible/easy to make it so that once the selection has been drawn, to extend the edges of it like you would an item? I'm just thinking when selecting a large chunk of a project, you might need to zoom in first to find the exact starting location and start the selection, then zoom out to see the full project and then extend the selection now that you have the correct starting location. Does that make sense? Right now it looks like you draw a selection and that's that, if you drag again it starts a new one.

Like in native Reaper, when selecting time you can zoom in as far as you want, start the time selection at the exact spot you need, then afterwards zoom out and pull the end handle to where you want it to end.

Don't you worry about that , its already implemented just needs polishing. You can adjust edges etc. Here is a gif from few pages back
I need to add graphics to it, there are zones when you are mouse over it, L - C - R, I will add when you are near/in that zone line shows up so you know you can modify the AS

Man you nailed it, fantastic work! Also it would be nice at some point if the mouse cursor change to a hand for example, when the mouse is over the edge of the selection .
