Default 10th Gen i3 10100 or i5 10400?

i3 10100 $114
4 cores, 8 threads, 3.6 Ghz (max 4.3 Ghz turbo), 6 MB L3 cache

i5 10400 $159
6 cores, 12 threads, 2.9 Ghz (max 4.3 Ghz turbo), 12 MB L3 cache

MB is Gigabyte B460M DS3H AC w/ Samsung 500GB 970 EVO M.2 NVMe SSD, 16 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2666 RAM, 650 Watt Corsair CX650M power supply.

Windows 10 Pro

Music being produced is heavy rock and metal. Plenty of virtual instruments being used. Track counts rarely exceed 50.

Thank you.

the i5. I'd prefer an i7, i9 seems overkill. i7 if the mobo will take it.

clock speed won't make an i3 perform like an i5 with more cores.

consider the cost of a VST vs the cost of a new uP. spend more on the uP.

i3? 'that is a name I haven't heard in a long time.'

nobody can guarantee 50 tracks with an i5. it'll be close, certainly pushing your computer to its limits. I imagine an i9 could push 100 tracks.

Thank you. The i7 10700 is $350 right now, which is above my budget, but when the price drops I will definitely upgrade.

I'm just running this one as per a recommendation, but its soooooooo quiet, I could go stronger and maybe would if I had to do it again. Zero heat issues running at stock speed.

There's a thread on this build elsewhere in this forum as well
