The big stumbling block is to make Reaper use such a configuration. It requires a lot of internal changes.

I was told that this has a chance of being implemented after Reaper 3.0 is released, so it'll take some time for this idea to be in our hands to use.

Ideas for functions you can assign to a zone :

1) Free selection where the start and end of the selection always fall on zero crossing

2) Free selection where the start and end of the selection always fall on the grid(even if snap and grid are off)

3) Clip gain

4) Copying of Automation in the selected area/item - think CTRL+drag of automation. All Automation / Single parameter on Lane. Doing this on the item that has no envelope overlaying it would automatically copy all. The copy would travel like an item box on the screen untill you let go of the functions activating method

5) Slide material inside the item in grid increments

6) your ideas

Just a note: would this editor, or the concept of a "total overhaul" for mouse control, include stuff like configuring the wheel? e.g., directions for scrolling/zooming? (Perhaps there should be the layers "scroll up", "down", etc. for various mouse types.)

--edit: I would also hope that this feature would allow one to achieve something like the following: "if I click-drag an item via zone x, and I'm holding the modifier y, make the position z in this zone snap (or not snap) in accordance with rule a". Make any kinda sense? Diagrams and essays when I've got the time!

Sorry if this is repetition.

I guess it could, because the mouse wheel is already available as an action anyway.

Think of it this way :

You could use one of the provided presets.

The best, most useful presets would be included in the official distribution. For example there could be the "Tallisman Music Production" preset of mouse zones, or a "Logic Audio 8" preset so folks transitioning from there have an easier time. Shane might create a "Editing Music Multitrack Recordings" preset that other could refine to their taste.

What would you do with mouse zone controls such as this ?

It would be a giant leap in usability, not just because people can change it all they want, but because you can provide more than one starting point, and quickly test these starting points as well. Fast prototyping of interface features.

And like a high-q linear-phase-filter pre-echo, I can hear a question of "What about the midi editor? " That's an idea I haven't pursued yet, but you're welcome to .

That last function you talked about would be amongst the function or action list, so that may be possible.

The automation lanes are a zone all by themselves. I'm not sure whether or not it's a good idea to be able to modify those editing capabilities.

Man, I'm salivating for this.

Did I mention, it would be great to see different contexts for different zoom levels?

e.g., all the way out, I'd love if every item click would do "virtually nothing". And all the way in, virtually everything. ;-) (So, as the size of the item literally grows in the display, more mouse-performable edits become possible.)

Slightly separate point: but I'd like if the display of such zones could be controlled as well, and at different zoom levels. It's useless to me if, after zooming out a certain amount, I see loads of mess representing fades.

Here's a further developed mockup that uses some of the ideas from the shot Shane posted.

Draggable divider lines, creation of new lines, better organization of layout.

The "Area" dropdown selector refers to being able to edit different areas. These would be Item, non-item area and envelope lanes.

How the zone areas could behave:
Left clicking in to one zone area would highlight it for editing.

Moving the mouse over any of the zones would show their contents in a number of possible ways, being tooltips that instantly pop up showing function and cursor, or an information panel below the Single Zone Settings button area, or the function and cursor are highlighted in the panels on the lower left and right.

Drag and drop of cursors and functions would of course be the quickest way to do it.

Right-clicking, well let's hear ideas for that.

Left-clicking on dividers and dragging would move the divider line.

Double-clicking in to a zone area would add a divider that divides the zone according to this law: Divide vertically if horizontal length is larger than the vertical one, and visa versa. Shift+Double-click would do the opposite.

ALT+click would delete the divider. The user would then need to point and click at the zone he/she would like to DELETE.

Stay tuned for further development of this idea. Please post any ideas you have.

Some food for thought about the current state of Reapers mouse zone configuration.

It has a lot of redundancies, as highlighted by colour in the picture I link to below. There is plenty of wasted opportunity here, especially since Reaper does nothing with the SHIFT modifier except add item selections.

And this is only the left mouse button.

I'd love all of this, however it seems like a huge development task, and I would be quite happy to move in this direction by starting with good default zones hard-coded in (non-customizable).

With this, I think that the right-click context menus could become much smarter, displaying different menus depending on what zone was clicked. Maybe some additional tiny icons on mouse-over (next to the lock) which have unique [short] context menus.
