Default REX2 support please

I know this has come up before, but I coldn't find a thread specifically in the FR forum, so here 'tis, REX2 support please

most daws have the abbility to use REX I think, cubase, logic, sonar, energyxt and reason obviously, probably others, it would be nice to add reaper to the list

I absolutely agree. Recently I have come to the problem how to batch convert RX2 files into single wav files. ( not all the slices separately). It'd be really cool if I could just drag and drop RX2 files to the timeline in Reaper...

I think there should be 3 main options when importing rx2.
-> add the whole loop as one item
* tempo independently, item is put in the timeline as one item in the tempo it originally had
* one item but the loop is set to timeline's tempo
-> add loop's slices as different items [just as of you might have seen in Logic ]
* tempo independently (original tempo)
* timeline tempo
-> also, implode to takes should work for RX2 imported events

Any other thoughts?
What are your opinions?

thanks

Yes I very much would like to see *native* Rex support, especially now that my other sequencer (Live) just got this!

I say "native" to mean being able to preview and d-n-d Rex files from the Explorer directly onto a track, with no special instrument needed (Sonar for example can only handle Rex files through its RXP player or Dimension synth).

++1 for drag and drop on a track (as a series of items @ current tempo), and into a sample player.

...and ++1 for that great EXS feature to map one loop on many keys, starting each copy from a *different drum hit* within the loop (great for playing them live: because you may either trigger single hits or longer fragments).

Yeah, I agree, it would be a useful feature! ReCycle makes cutting easy..

If REX2 files were to be added, in the media explorer it would be sweet if you could select either the one file, or go inside it (like a folder) and select individual cuts (for dragging into ReaDrums for example!)

I havent requested or asked for a feature yet, everyone gets one right? :P (Or is that Spiderman?)

+1 for REX2 support.

I hope this can be done properly/fully - i.e. support for the audio file AND MIDI file that accompanies it, as this provides a great way to mess with the slices of the loop. The reason I add this is that Tracktion 3 recently had REX support added, but it only handles the audio as a loop, without support for the MIDI loop... so no different to, say, an ACID loop. But REX loops are capable of much more stuff.

RE: Live 7, the video looks cool. I love Live 6 and have been into Live since version 2 way back... so I am very much looking forward to version 7 too

I don't think this midi stuff is very important if rx2 support gets added. You can move your cursor to the next transient in the selected item in Reaper, create your own slices (with crossfades), then build up a new groove using multitakes...

The whole point of the rx2 format is that ReCycle has already done that work for you. Without the MIDI file, they might as well be just ordinary wavs. The slicing done by ReCycle is stored in the form of the MIDI file.

I tried slicing in Reaper using tab-s and it is fantastic. But the point of requesting REX support is that those of us who have a pile of REX files and/or ReCycle lying around would like to be able to use the full benefits of that format - including the slices stored in the MIDI file - directly within Reaper.

PS what might be nice in Reaper is to have the MIDI file on the track without displaying the audio anyway - in other words like a VST instrument track, with the MIDI referencing the audio slices. Having two tracks would be against the overall Reaper ease of use.

In Logic, Cubase and Sonar I believe there is a need for two tracks - MIDI and audio - for REX files. It would be nice to avoid that.

That's right, i understand you! What i've been referring to is...what if i wanted to slice that loop myself, in a different way and it is only available in rx2 format? Yeah, i could open it in recycle, save entire loop as a wav file. It works. perfectly! The only problem is that i have hundreds of collected valuable grooves in rx2 format and i stil haven't found any solution yet how to batch-convert them into wavs. If only i could just implode them to takes, put one after another in the timeline in Reaper and render it as wav file.

That's right! I've recently got to know that and immediately installed it... works perfectly with Reaper.

I have already requested this more than once in the past.
For the moment my workaround is to import rex2 files into Stylus RMX.
But it's a bit cumbersome and the RMX import tool doubles the size of the files.
So you end up with a lot of wasted disk space.

Cheers
Raphael

This is exactly how I feel. For my own slicing Tab-S is great, but I've got a lot of Rex files and I'd like to cut out the middleman.

Live 7's out today with native Rex support, and part of me wants to upgrade just for that alone! But I'd really rather not...

I think that with Live and Reaper it's still worth having both, and there are some other good things in Live 7 too. I'm in no hurry to upgrade though because... well, the price. The cost of being a Live user really adds up after time.

I would be tempted to get the Suite including the new instruments too... but again the price is off-putting. For that money I would really expect Live to be my main piece of music software, and in some areas it is nowhere near that... hmmm.

REX2 support would be great as long as its as good as XT2s support
The latest version of XT2 runs sweet inside Reaper and it will take a hell of a lot to beat the REX2 support in that

- to be able to trigger the playback of each slice by sending a MIDI note.

- and once you've got the extracted MIDI file you can rearrange it to get your own grooves

As with Kontakt
