Default Theme nuances - optimize images

I made this
https://stash.reaper.fm/theme/2379/S...ReaperThemeZip

out of this
https://stash.reaper.fm/theme/2281/J...ReaperThemeZip

by modifying the images (among other things).

The original theme is as light as 249.08 KB and the new one is a 1.34 MB heavyweight, which I find profoundly unfair. And I want to do right by this new theme.
I opened images in GIMP
https://www.gimp.org/
made some changes and then exported the new images without any compression (I guess that's what made them "gain weight").
The suggested by the GIMP developers compression level is 9.
Should I trust that suggestion?
How do you manage to keep images clean and lightweight?

P. S. If I decide to make all the corners rounded I'll have to modify a lot more images and the theme file might get huge, and completely unnecessarily huge...

No. PNG is a lossless format, so nail it as far as it will go.

Just to be clear, I can compress the images as much as the program allows so the files get smaller (use less space on the disk)?

Yes.

The only downside, and I strongly recommend that you ignore it, is that when loading your theme Reaper needs to decompress the images, which will take longer the harder you've squeezed them. And by 'longer' I mean 'fractions of a second, total' unless your theme is an absolute monster of huge images. In this ludicrously massive theme I still compressed the images fully, and even in that extreme example the loading time is just a moment.

https://pnggauntlet.com/

I use this for exactly that...

works great and like WT says... the extra loading time is meaningless
while the HD space saved is great...
