Wow! That looks like a combination of Reaper, Cuendo, Sonar and Logic on steroids! I had looked at the smaller graphics you've been posting, I didn't realize they linked to a graphic of the entire application render.

Great work! You have some serious graphic skills my friend. I love the semi-transparent audo parts where you can see the grid behind them. Cool.

Since we're wishing... drop another timeline or marker track in the middle somewhere referencing to a different source like smpte.

This is great. How about moving those icons from the top to the middle where the transport bar is a-la-Logic 8?

I want that daw!

"Reaper: The Next Generation"... ?

Lawrence: you can already show the grid through the audio items

Option / Snap Grid Settings (Alt + L)

yeah, you should also be able to dock the macro buttons to the transport, or even have them as a floating bar

original midi editor pic updated

edit: showing notes name, hopefully schwa's plugin built in

Yeah, but your mockup looks ... different. It looks... better. Just not lines cutting through but something else that I can't put my digits on.

Maybe it's the colors you picked there. Anyway...

Just a slight edit. Hope you don't mind.

I see here some thoughts I've had but never got around to posting. Didn't think of all of this, but some of items on your list have been on my "back of the head" list and hadn't quite popped out yet.

Thanks.

Yup. A little room for your excellent creative juices.

Automation state controls perhaps? Read, write, touch, crossover?

You've covered just about everything else. Great work.

I've come back to this, thinking about the layout of the Midi Editor. This is more intuitive, the more i think about it.

I just mentioned in that thread that lauding the designe of the New Default theme that I rarely even down load themes anymore... if you fix the dark half of the FX icon and actually release this and the darker version... there will be 2 more themes for me to acquire swiftly!

Wow, I can't believe I missed this until now. Amazing work!

I think this would not only be useful on huge monitors, but also widescreen laptops! Collapsible dockers, more horizontal info... it's great!

k, so I also started working on the flat look, far from done.
People will probably like that one less, yet some might still use it, you tell me ...

the important detail though is the change at the bottom, showing the dock tabs instead of the collapse/expand bar (they still remain for the sides though)
also added the track envelopes to the MCP

Oh man. I looked at almost every mock-up on here, then I opened up Reaper and kind of frowned. All of those docks are a thing of wonder. Your last mock-up puts the GUI's of any other sequencer I've seen to shame.

I like the original original version a lot, but the flat version is better IMO. Seems a little less distracting than the other. The only changes I would make on the flat one are...

1. Make the selected buttons a solid color rather than just colored on the edges. They don't stand out as much as they should right now.

2. Darken the buttons slightly to soften the overall tone of the GUI. Right now, all of the buttons jump out at me just a little bit too much. I just put the screenshot into an editor and did a quick global color replace from 135/136/136 to 106/106/106 and it looks a lot better / less aggressive (to my eyes @ 3:30am anyway).

Other than that I'm loving it and look forward to being able to use this someday...

The advanced UI isn't just a skin. Although Brice has come up with a fabulous look, and some great functionality, the changes would require a major overhaul by Justin and the programming crew.

I don't know if the tantalizing hint of "not before Christmas" implies that they may be working on implementing some or all of these interface suggestions. If they choose to do so, Reaper will without a doubt be one of the slickest (if not THE slickest) DAWs on the market.

My congrats to Brice for this conceptual work. I've had a look at the mockups in some detail and the suggestions would make Reaper even more of a joy to use.

I am absolutely BESOTTED with the Advanced UI Idea... I am even eager to get hold of just the theme alone!

Brice? Will you be releasing the theme at all? Or is this stricly mockup?

RichardM: the 'before christmas' was only what Justin said, because he'll be busy working on the mac version and other stuffs.

Yet I don't think my requests would require a 'major overhaul', I tried only to use things reaper already has, making small tweaks along the way.

happymonkey: updated flat mockup
might make the buttons darker later

artkau: yeah I'll make the theme public, but as I said before, I keep making changes to it right now, so may take a while.

Apply these ideas to REAPER. Make it ubercustomizable, down to the last button and window frame, i.e. frameless windows.

Brace yourself for Adobe's Photoshop overhaul

Adobe Systems wants to transform its flagship Photoshop software with an interface customized to the task at hand, a potentially radical revamp for software whose power today is hidden behind hundreds of menu options. A new user interface will help Photoshop become "everything you need, nothing you don't," said Photoshop product manager John Nack, describing aspirations for the Photoshop overhaul on his blog Monday. "We must make Photoshop dramatically more configurable," Nack said. "Presenting the same user experience to a photographer as we do to a radiologist, as to a Web designer, as to a prepress guy, is kind of absurd... With the power of customizability, we can present solutions via task-oriented workspaces," Nack said.

Incredibly sane.

As power increases user configurability is a must, otherwise you're diffusing the usability among options.

The present GUI model for most programs is leftover from OS/2 and Geo innovations, and Word Perfect. Too much crammed into the first tier menuing, button presentation...

... and I'm still not sure why it all has to be onscreen all the time, when it could hide offscreen - as well as be activated via mouse gestures...
