Default ARM plugin compatibility?

Hi,

I am on the fence to buy a M1 MBP because of the very confusing plugin compatibility.

Some plugins I use are already available as "M1 native" and some not.
Can somebody help me to understand how thing would run in Reaper with a M1?
Can I get the M1 performance boost for the native plugs but still use the Intel plugs in parallel?

Logic for example can handle ARM and Intel (via Rosetta I guess) in kind of an hybrid mode. Is something like that possible with Reaper?

Thank you!

Go for it. Reaper has the same hybrid ARM/Intel capability. When I switched to an M1 I noticed that my non-M1 plugins seemed to run in Rosetta just as fast if not a little faster than they did on my Intel machine. But when the plugins are updated to be M1 native then they become much faster.

These days it seems like M1 support is becoming pretty common. Native Instruments even just released an M1 version of Kontakt which is big news.

You can use the 'Universal' installer to run Reaper as ARM64 native on M1 mac.
- x86 plugins will be bridged and run in a separate window
- some plugins won't be available
- stock plugins and m1 ready plugins will run normally

You can also open the app in Rosetta mode with a toggle in Get Info.
- access to everything x86

You can also use the Intel optimized version on an M1 mac.
- access to everything x86
- some small visual differences between Universal app.

iLok just got their M1 support released in the past 2 weeks so the bigger paid plugins should all be updated soon.

its clear as mud. You kind of have to install everything and see what works. I've been happy with the Intel version on my M1 mini for the wider plugin compatibility without bridging. On my new mac I may try to only do native supported plugins and Universal reaper.

clear as mud > perfect explaination :-)

Thanks for the anwers!

My main concern is that Autotune and NeuralDSP will run.
But yes, it is a matter of time until all the plugin vendors release M1 native support.
What I don't get is that some new plugins get released without M1 support??

because they'll usually still work in Rosetta mode and for all users on Intel Macs. It buys them some time, and budget, and releasing reveals a lot of bugs they missed with internal testing.

Read somewhere else that Reaper ARM can only bridge Intel plugins with the AU format?

there's some kind of automatic bridging that seems like native. I try to stick with vst3
