Default Reaper crashing on M1

Hi all,

I got a fancy new M1 Mac and am trying to transfer all my music stuff. I downloaded the newest version of Reaper (the one for mac 10.15+) and marked it to open with Rosetta (which confuses me, I thought there was an M1 version of Reaper) Reaper opens fine but as soon as I try to open a project it crashes. What am I doing wrong?

I appreciate any help!

Greg

"marked it to open with Rosetta (which confuses me, I thought there was an M1 version of Reaper) "

The universal version will run on Intel or Apple processors, detecting automatically, or with the rosetta option force the Intel version on Apple processor.
It uses a different compiler than the Intel optimized build, which also runs on Apple silicon.
Yeah that is confusing.

A few months ago there was a build that only ran on Apple processor.

you'll have to check the error log to find out what caused the crash

You can try opening the project with FX offline, then enable them a few tracks at a time and you might be able to avoid the crash, or narrow down the issue to a problem plugin.

Ok thanks. I cant really read the error report and know whats casued the crash. But you're saying it could be an incompatible plugin? How do I open a project with FX offline?

you can find the error logs in Application/Utility/Console.app

search for reaper and sort by date

there's some info about reading the error logs in this post

Open with offline fx
CMD-O (open project)
check the box

Thanks for all the info. I'm able to start up Reaper now and load a project while having FX off. I'm going through each plugin and activating it. By activating the plugins one-by-one will Reaper crash when I activate the right one? Or does that only occur at startup?

One other thing. When I open Reaper I get the following error: “reaper_reapack-x86_64.dylib” cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified. Then I have an option to cancel or delete. Cancelling opens Reaper. Is this something I can delete?

Thanks again for all the help

I'm able to open Reaper, but if I open a project via the most recent menu it crashes. It also crashes when I try to open a project directly.

I can open a project with the FX turned off.

Whats the process for figuring out whats crashing Reaper? Do I open the project, delete one of the FX, save the project, then try again? Seems laborious.

I appreciate any help!

PS: Why are you opening Reaper in Rosetta?

As EpicSound suggested, you should check the crash log. Sometimes you can see which plugin caused Reaper to crash in this log, it's the first thin to try before checking the plugins one by one.
Also, make sure you have the latest versions of all your plugins.

When this happens, skip out to Apple System Preferences before you do anything else, and look under Security and Privacy. Should be a notification hanging out asking for permission.
