Default Album Five, Walking With Ghosts Past, is out there.

Greetings to all,

After a few months of recording, mixing, mastering, the works, my fifth album is out and ready to be listened to by the masses. My goal has always been to leave something behind when I go through the exit door, and I am quite happy with how it sounds.

I was thinking of dropping it onto Soundcloud, and, while I am happy with how my other works sound on there, and I happy with the site in general...I cannot see how, being I am close to running out of my time limit, that it would be worth paying the high price when I don't intend to make money off of it. Sure, they provided a great platform, yet I shall put a Pro plan on hold for now.

So...what can you expect? What do I expect? Once again, don't put too much emphasis on how my vocals need work--I know this quite well; HOWEVER, they are much better than my last one. Instead of doing one take and saying, "that is the best I can ever hope to do," I did quite a few takes just to get it decent. Pitch problems here and there, but I am satisfied. Tell me what I need to work on in the mixing and mastering field for future projects. The aim is to keep improving.

I am providing a link to where these songs are. The best part is by clicking on the each song under my name, you can get the lyrics. I will look to improve my presence on this site as time goes on...just finished uploading today. I don't expect anything really. We are all in a huge sea, trying to make our own mark. If you wish, please...give them a listen or many.

Mille grazie,
Gino D.

Album is now on Soundcloud. I actually like it there, so I purchased the Pro account. Enjoy!

Kick drum top end is pronounced to poke through so as listener does not miss the intricacy of the part played? It is tight but I think could be better, however I realise a lot of other modern prog does same thing,so maybe it is just me? I hear better from the engineering work done for Paul Hammond,John Weathers,Ric Parnell,Guy Evans,Pip Pyle to name drop some of my personal favourite drummers from the UK prog and rock scene.Yours sounds more like a metal style approach to a sound?
Your strength is in musicianship, arrangement and lyrics.
Don't take this the wrong way,it's all good and is a matter of personal taste I am sure, but I think the mixing is the weakness here.
The vocal sound (not voice) is also a bit flat, too honest,I would like more interest, untethered? hard to say what technique really as I never spent much time with vocal engineering but it needs lift.
You really do have a grasp on complexity of content, story, journey and that is quite rare talent!
Enjoyed listening to the collection,it is clever.
Thanks and remember it's just one opinion.

Default Prom:

Thank you! grazie! That is exactly what I wanted to hear. It will be sometime next September until I do it again--and I want each one to show improvement.
Thank you once again.

In reference to the drums:
Weathers and Evans I know very well. Up to my third album, Maladies, I had problems getting the kick to sound up there and provide UUMPHH! Yes, it does seem to be quite noticeable in modern Prog. I shall take on note on tightening that up next year.

In reference to vocal recording:
My biggest burden. Had a vocalist lined up (once again), yet he took a job elsewhere. The first two songs, especially Hollows, sounds flat. I hear it now. I had to knock it a bit back because it was overpowering the background. Compared to my first album, Where You Are I Shall Be, it is a vast improvement...gosh! I was a complete novice when I put that one up. Continual improvement for the future.

On reference to the Metal sound:
I come from that background in the 80's...loved the complexity of Mercyful Fate, without the Satanic references. I usually like heavy guitars as a surprise element, yet this go around it seemed the songs called for them. Since I am 60 years old now, my right wrist gives me problems due to obsessive playing, and at work from over use, being I am missing 3 2/3 fingers from the left hand it picks up the slack, so I can't zip on the fretboard during solos as in the old days.

On the compliment of overall abiltiy:
Thank you! A guy always told me, "if you can't sing well, you better makes sure your lyrics are good. Nobody will be paying attention to how bad you sing it.

No offense taken at all. I want to hear it as it is. I am only an amateur, but I want to be an excellent amateur.
Best of a day to you,
Gino D.

Yes, Pro does not necessarily = better, just some $£,recognition and tied into a schedule maintained by the machine.
I think that acoustic pecussion engineering has never really surpassed what was achieved in 70's.
Are you subtely layering vocal tracks? Could be that is the key here, or delays that are almost non detectable?
Hope you can find ways to improve what is already there.
Happy that you are in good spirits Gino!
It is a real achievement to do everything yourself and get results that are comparable with the best Pro sound teams working in the business.
Best

I did use delay on the vocal...perhaps not enough of it, for I don't hear it as much. Good point!
