Default Spectral Gates - system16 [+ video clip] - space-math-rock

Hi all!

So yeah. Lockdown was a weird time to make music. I'm in a two-piece band, and to follow up our debut album we ended up hacking together, like, three album's worth of music, all remote.

Here's the first of it. Kinda crazy electronic space-rock. All audio done in Reaper.

Note - the clip has tons of intense strobing.

Cheers!

Great psych trip to the 80s. Killer editing too, did you actually damage those games with hex editor or something? And those eyes appearing for split second look distinctly Commodore 64.

Hahaha ... well-spotted on both counts. + thanks.

MAME has a pretty powerful memory editor and debugger for setting up cheat codes and debugging drivers. You can make use of that to corrupt sprite registers and change random text (useless trivia: the font is off-by-one from ASCII for the number glyphs). Took a ton of study to get it to that point without crashing the ROM though.

And yeah, some of the eye graphics are from C64 title screens zoomed right in. That palette is so distinctive.

The intense red/green/grey parts are from public domain NASA photos.

I wanted to get it increasingly damaged as it progressed - just something so it wasn't just a "Let's Play Altered Beast!". When I was a kid, my dad serviced those machines so we always had a few of them around the house, and I wanted to try and get a hyperrealistic capture of the vibe of those big machines.

That's serious amount of know how and effort to make youtube video more clever than average. I'm checking the rest of the band on bandcamp, really should make an account one day.

I remember your other video with games you posted here some time ago, and all of this is oddly familiar. Outrun or Altered Beast were pretty known here from emerging arcades or home computer ports, Commodore 64 (with its oddly "dirty" looking colours) was probably second most popular micro here for a while. Is this how the home computing/gaming scene in Australia looked like, or did you move from Europe? Also having a parent servicing arcade machines seems like an absolute 80s kid dream scenario no matter where you were from

(US gaming nostalgia is barely comprehensible to me, feels like it's mostly infinite Mario and general Nintendo mashups)
