I know I'm far from the only one who has trouble finishing things and I think part of the reason for it is that writing solo, I'm not accountable to anyone else to ever even finish my tracks.
Anyways, the premise here is that anyone who wants to face their fear of finishing declares their intent to be done with a musical track or project by a certain date. Why not post WIP here and maybe get some feedback along the way?
But what's done is done.
Start any day.
Is it today?
Maybe tomorrow?
Rules:
1. Declare your intent to finish a song & set a date...
2. Link your finished track by your deadline...
3. It can be something new or something in progress; one song or a comprehensive box set of your life's work...
4. But you must complete it or else! Shame! Shame! Shame...
I like the idea. Can it be an old song, as in not an original, self-composed? I am reworking a version I did in Audacity a few years back of Buddy Holly's Raining in My Heart!
I have a two minute sketch project so far. Made my breathy instrument by the dumbest way probably, rendering 24 reversed, stretched notes and loading each one into a rs5k instance (didn't want to have length pentalty for pitchshifting, I bet there's less dumb and laborious way). Everything does sound like a 70s crime drama theme.
Things I learned to do in like 15 years of "music production" hobby, while aiming for something completely different:
1. bad 70s crime drama music
2. Weather forecast soundtracks
3. ?

@ZK,I'm reposting this from other forum, it's a bit relevant to previous topics around here inc the rebranded Chinese made entry level strat copy, mine's branded 'Magnum' and is the only gtr used on this track.
Procrastination level was low to moderate on this one, the only real holdup was figuring out a bridge to the key modulated later verse etc.
Quote:
“Seems like only yesterday” track made with an entry level strat copy, free vst’s [My Drumset; and a bass gtr vst in free Kontakt etc]
Sgear is the only sound on there that isn’t $0.00
I was doing a total resurfacing of me LP gtr neck which took quite a while so I did a “mock up” version of the track using the cheap strat copy, but I kind of like it on this particular song. I’ve got a better quality Yamaha but it’s out of service as well atm.
I'm not a procrastinator as much as a, "I recorded a first take, some guitar, some bass, some midi drums, some vocals, started to EQ, and... oooh.. I wrote a new song and its my new favorite and I recorded a first take, some guitar, some bass, some.... oooh I wrote a new song and its my new favorite and I recorded a first take, some guitar, some bass...." (wash, rinse, repeat).
And I feel everyone mixes better than I am capable of... and and and (insert whatever fear most people cannot believe I have - in most of my life I have confidence bordering on arrogance...)
And so... is this still open? If so, I'm in.
If so, I'll pick one of my mostly unrecorded songs and commit. If not, I will still commit.
Well, I have two days left as well and I hope whichever tune I post will not sound too silly next to the efforts sent by all you experimental types. Rank amateur is my job description.
My current version is 1:44 long, has a beginning and is still heavily under construction(deep research into mixing sampled Latvian 1980s floor tom). Also not very experimental, I'm as pedestrian as ever.

I'll post updates when I make progress. Currently, I have one guitar track panned hard left, one hard right, and vocals centered. I am putting notes on the page about plans and progress.
Already did some vocal edits and I like how that turned out. Finally got the guitar solo sounding somewhere close where I want it and did some ok tweaks to the bass tracks.
I have a full day in the studio ahead of me today. Going to replace some ReaEQ stuff with ReEQ (a wonderful jsfx plugin made by a forum member) and see where that goes. Also hope to finish the vocal editing today.
Ok, lets say it's done. Made with my mutant surfcaster and using a couple of samples off freesound.org (recording of some guy tuning his tanpura and a neat tabla loop):
Youtube video on the way, coz the guitar looks kinda cool and it's not on youtube yet for some reason. Just need to make it presentable, crop my fat head out and so on.

Jeez. It would take me a month just to memorize all those parts. I guess you must have some theoretical knowledge because some of those chords shapes look completely new to me... What the heck is that thing you do at 3:00? Looks like you hit the whammy a little, but it changes the tone of the chord afterward. Really cool.
Inventing the title is extra hard if your work has no message.
I find that to be the easiest thing in the world, personally. I just write the first random thing that pops into my head. I once titled a song Shrimp Foetus El Scampi...
On the other hand, this track is goshdarn impressive. Nice work. I particularly like the way the drums and bass groove.
I have a text file on my phone where I collect all the words and phrases I thought of to use for titles. The problem is they usually turn out to be rather common pun (used for 6 thousand songs on discogs already) or something very pretentious sounding. I'm not good enough to get away with being pretentious.
I took "Rearward Effort" from one of those spam emails with gibberish section used to fool antispam filters. It's my favourite. Though I don't see those gibber emails anymore

OK, so that day in the studio didn't quite work out the way I hoped; I was editing out some noises in the vocals (breaths and stuff like that) and didn't notice right away that the cuts where replicated in all the midi-tracks as well (actually in ALL the tracks, period). That was one hell of a mess to deal with afterward. Found the setting that says to cut ALL tracks if nothing is selected... why the hell would anyone want that ?!
Never mind, sorted it all out in a few extra hours work and I'm still on track to get it done in time for the deadline here

]if it doesnt have strings;... its "procrastinators" spiral
(i cant just buy a "lifetime" supply of strings though)
then THINK this, then THINK that, *THINKING IS NOT YR 'FREIND'
just DO something
one step 2 step 3 step 4,.
be organized;... develop a workflow

Tell me ya didn't see that one coming. Actually I didn't, I have been working on songs and thought I'd just be able to throw at least one down but on -recording- it turns out some of that progress was illusory especially singing wise. Note to self: PROJECT. E Nun Cee Ate. Record. Listen. Repeat. Oh well, there's always next week, maybe.
Thanks again, fox, for kindly providing this substitute for discipline and willpower. At least I'm back on the horse.

meh, i haven't been keeping up on that and it didn't really help anyway...I just thought it would to have some more public accountability...don't be discouraged; set a deadline you can meet!
I finally got around to checking out this thread.
But I haven't posted any unfinished work. Some finished atuff in my sig though.
I'll try to get to it...
