Default selecting external midi editor.

for now, in case the current midi editor doesnt do it, i figure it would be a good idea to assign an external midi editor.

however, when you do this, it totally eliminates the regular editor.

is there a way that you double click and it selects the regular reaper editor, and then if you right click and select external it uses an external one such as FLstudio?

i would like to have FL or Ext as a backup editor in case there is something i want to do that reaper cant handle ATM..

however, i hope soon reaper will be able to.

CAN FLS accept arguments of this sort?

e.g.
c:\program files\image-line\FLS6\FL.exe c:\proj\song1\midiA.mid

Make changes and then commit them back to file? If it can, that's pretty cool. I'm gonna check the docs right now.

you sort of can, now that i think of it, but its convoluted.. you have to export as midi, its messy.

I wonder if there is a better midi editor to use for this stuff.

Default FR: external editors

I'd like to see the whole "external editor" thing a little clearer. The process of writing this led to defining it as a feature request.

I started out trying to figure how to get my wave and midi editors installed... can't do it. As far as I can tell, I get one wave editor and one midi editor, and this only if I want my midi editor to be the default editor for everything.

This is with
(default)=encore
WAV=audacity
MID undefined = reaper

with .mid files, 'default' editor is encore, and 'editor' is reaper
with .wav files, 'default' editor is encore(ack!), and 'editor' is audacity

if I put encore as MID instead of (default), I can't use reaper's midi editor

Ideally, IMHO
- There is a list of types (extensions) that reaper supports

- Each type can have zero, one, or more external editors defined by a command line (with the usual exename.exe "filename.ext" as default

- The context menu for a media item offers "Edit With <name1..n>" options for each editor that handles the type.

- One editor on each list (the first) is default, i.e. it is associated with the Ctrl+Alt+E edit key, and the first listed in the context menu.

- there is a way of specifying the reaper internal editor that is different than specifying "no editor". This may not matter if the MIDI editor is the only one reaper is going to have.

I can't figure out what the (default) editor is for. It seems to be pretty much for midi/wave apps like fruity, vegas, or ext only? And why is it called default when it is NOT the default as in double-click and it opens? Is it default as in "opens everything without an editor defined"?

+1 It would be great to select an external MIDI editor "now and again", with Reaper MIDI editor the default (without messing with audio editor default settings).

Default External editor / default editor

Hi Jason, EnzymeX and all the others,

I remember having complained about this bug/problem a long time ago... it seemed that nobody was interested in MIDI so I gave up...

I still don't understand why you lose access to Reaper internal editor when you assign an external one...

I couldn't find anything in the docs on anyway of piping midi to be edited in FLS via a command line with argument.

So it seems opening the midi file from disk, edit, then save back to disk.

For now I just export rendered audio from FLS after I'm done my midi/vsti work.

Default Yup it works

I was sure I had this working both with Samplitude and with Reaper's editor... then I saw the date on the request.

Set up an "External editor" with "mid" as the filename and point to your midi editor. Right-click and open either with the built-in editor or the external one.
