Default Instant item split?

If you drag a smaller item over the top of a longer item and place it in the middle, it doesn't make automatic split points at the edges of the small clip, so that if I select either side of the remaining longer item, it selects all of it. With the type of editing I'm doing I'd like it to automatically make splits at the edges. I've had a look around and can't find a setting for this. Am I missing it, or is there a work around?

Right-click your toolbar, select 'Customize Toolbar', click 'Add' (bottom left) and in the filter box, type: split

Maybe one of those custom actions?

Just right click the crossfade icon on your main toolbar; "trim content behind."

You need either the action:

Item: Remove content (trim) behind items
I believe this defaults to Shift + X

or the option
Options: Cycle through editing modes: Auto-crossfade off, auto-crossfade on, trim content behind items

That option will allow you to have it happen all the time.

Thanks Fergler & others, sorted.

I'm moving from Pro Tools, finding it slightly difficult as I'm trying to make it like PT. I'm slowing adjusting away from this and not thinking 'how can I do this like PT' as I'm actually missing out on features and probably better work flows that Reaper has!
