Default Problem w/Audio. Please help!

Hi,

I have my headphones plugged into my PreSonus Audiobox II, and my regular speakers plugged into the speaker jack in the back of my computer. I have the Preferences-Audio in the Reaper program set on ASIO. I had Ken Theriot over at Home Brew Audio look at a screenshot of my audio setup, and he said it looked right to him.

PROBLEM: Anything I listen to on my computer will come out over the regular speakers, but in the Reaper program, itself, I can only get audio out of the headphones from my PreSonus, NOT over the speaker system.

Can someone please help me figure out how to get the Reaper audio to come out of my computer speaker jack, as well. I have some Roland Powered Speakers that I am going to hook up to my Allen & Heath Zed 10 mixer board so that I can hear the audio output through them. However, I need to get this problem fixed first before I move onto that step. Please help me find what I am doing wrong.

Thank you in advance!

Troy

Asio on windows is ONE device driver at a time.
Forget the crappy on board soundcard and plug your monitors into the Presonus.

Will I get audio for my Windows Player and Vids on my computer by plugging the speakers into the PreSonus? Or will it be, strictly, for the Reapers DAW? Also, I was hoping that I would be able to switch between headphones and speakers and a combination of both.

You can, but it has to be done via the interface, not you onboard stuff.

FWIW I have everything running through my RME card no problem at all apart from I have to use a monitor controller for headphones as my particular RME doesnt have an amplified phones out!

@ivansc or any other understanding and knowledgeable person: Two things - I have used an Akai DPS 16 for many years, since the month of their release, actually, so this DAW computerized stuff is all new to me. I have no idea what an RME is, and I still need some instructions on how to do this. Sorry, guys, I don't know what you mean by "done via interface." Which interface? The DAW interface? If so, how? Also, will I need splitters for the out from my PreSonus for headphones and external speakers? I know that I will definitely need RCA/1/4" adapters for the speakers to be plugged into the PreSonus.

RME make audio/MIDI interfaces like your Presonus.
You already have the kit to do this, just need to hook the outputs of the Presonus to something that will amplify the sound.

and de-select the internal sound card of your computer as default audio playback.

Good luck - you only have to do this stuff once and hopefully then you will be good to go regardless!

"...something that will amplify the sound."

What do you suggest?

you should plug your monitors into the output of presonus.
Then you should set the presonus as default audio interface both for windows (from the audio control panel) and reaper (you already have it).
By this way all the audio from your pc will go trought the presonus and you can forget the crappy integrated audio interface.

what kind of monitors do you have?
you don't need any splitter, on your presonus you have phones and main outs

I have Roland DS50A Powered Speakers. I have attached a pic of what they look like - front and back.

The other question is this: When I am recording, obviously, since I am not separated from the "recording area," I only want playback through the headphones. So, do I get a splitter for that? Or do I just go back and forth between unplugging the speakers and plugging in the headphones and vice versa?

EDIT: Forget that last question. You answered it in your last post, metal_priest. I see the main outs on the back of the PreSonus and the phones on the front. Can each volume be manipulated separately on the PreSonus? Phones vs Mains?

this is your audio interface, right?
you have two knobs there, called phones and main.
Phones set the phones level and main set the main out (aka speakers) level...when you want to hear just from the headphones simply turn the main vol down

No, that's not the one I have. Attached, you'll find a pic of the model I have.

I also have the mixer in the pic I have attached here for playing live. I don't assume I need it for my Reaper recordings, but I wanted to show you in case you had any other ideas.

oh, ok.
well, nothing different actually, just the aesthetics

I assume that the big knob is the main level and the little knob with the headphones logo is the headphones level.
So, everything said till now is still valid, just put the speakers into the main out and set the presonus as default interface for windows.

EDIT: here the cool pics
