Default Problems with: Implode as Takes (usless bits of trivia and Haiku)

Currently if one decides to implode items to takes, some odd and unexpected results occur - results that I believe are undesirable.

If you have several short items on a track, that have been rendered to a stem. if you then implode that stem into takes with the smaller items, then the original items lose their original positions and lengths. So this:

Becomes this (where you can see that despite the locking of the original items, these items have lost their positioning). We end up with a single Takes Stack, which I believe is bad:

This occurs using both implode to takes actions.

If the longer item is pre-split in the right places, then implode items across tracks to takes works. It would work better if they imploded to the last selected track, and if the items on the last selected track defaulted to take 1:

But if we attempt the same thing only on one track: implode selected items on one track into takes, the results are bad, even if we pre-split the long ones, and lock others!:

in either of the above cases this, IMHO, is the desired result:

Perhaps some users will say, "No I like it when my item positioning is ignored and things are moved on me and re-sized!" that is why I am proposing that this behaviour - the maintenance of take positioning and order be made dependent on locking items.

So in conclusion I would like to suggest:
  • If items are locked, their positions should be left in tact and they should become take 1
  • If a long item is being imploded to takes on a track with shorter, locked items, the Longer items should be split at logical places to enable the locked shorter items to maintain their positioning.
  • This behaviour should be implemented for both implode to takes options

thanks for your time.

greetings

ps. so is this a bug, a feature, a nit pick, a picnic or a bit of all?

another thought:

If I am dragging an item from the media explorer onto a track with locked and selected items, and if I select import as takes into selected items,

the the drag-n-dropped items should be split accordingly and imported as takes to the previously locked items, at the previously locked items current positions.

If I am dragging several items at the same time, onto a track with selected and locked items; and if I select import as takes, then the new items are split according to the original items and imploded as takes. Where the imported items have portions that do not line up with the original items - they for take stacks too, by them selves. heheh clear as mud

discuss
no
make it so!

This has to be fixed for sure... If items are locked they should preserve their positions... Maybe we just need to fit those audio items to the midi ones but after that they should implode in their positions...

We have waited so long to reply because the bumps were so informative and educational.

The underlying issue is that takes of a single item must all be the same length (for reasons that are probably clear, but if the reasons are not clear, just have faith because that's the way it is).

So, what do you do when imploding various different length items to takes. Current behavior: force everything to be the maximum length and stack them all. Your wish: intelligently split items to create logical stacks of takes. The latter behavior leads to all sorts of corner cases though. Like, what do you do if you have two items of different lengths that start at different times? Split both items and add silence, creating 3 stacks? Extend both items?

Here is some more information.

I was just reading an article about how scientists found a new planet that is 120 light years away that might support life. Think about this:

120 light years would be 720,000,000,000 (720 trillion miles). If you were to drive this in your SUV (assuming you get about 15 MPG) you would need 48,000,000,000 gallons of fuel, and at $4.00 a gallon it would cost you about $192,000,000,000.00. Not to mention, if you drove it at 65 miles an hour it would take you 184,615,385 hours, or about 21 thousand years to get there - that's equal to 263 lifetimes.

Just as an FYI...

I think that overthinking this problem and or any of the trivia in this thread will lead to meltdown and status quo whihc makes me sad.

simply think of this: longer items get split to the length of the shortest.
In this video you will not that all of the items are imploded onto track 1 which contains 2 short items.

http://shup.com/Shup/70289/mobetter.implode.small.avi

the longest item gets split many times (11), and finds itself take 2 in the two stacks of 4 takes, and take 1 in all the rest.

I believe that if items are locked when implode actions are called, the locked items should be take 1, and the rest of the behaviour should be as illustrated in that video.

greetings

I forgot to mention - I checked out your YouTube vid on Freeze, and saw your video for 3.0.6.

I am not into all rap, just certain songs I like - some Dre, Cube, Snoop, Wu-Tang, Busta....

I really like this song man! Do you have any new ones? Put 'em in the Music forum man - you are talented, and I want more!
