Default COMPRESSOR: Higher ratio reduces less db?

Hi all

I tought I knew how a compressor works but apparently not?

These picture show the same signal (a loud peak of a nylon guitar) with the same threshold but 2 different ratio's.

As you can see the 2.0 ratio reduces better then the 10.0 ratio? How is this possible?

A signal divided by 10 should be quiter right?

low ratio:

High ratio:

thanks !

For a digital compressor your assumptions are right.
But, for analog modeling comps, things can be pretty much all over the place (but, usually not)

In this case I guess ratio 2 gives lower threshold.
Check the manual.

Yes, it should compress more. With a 10:1 ratio you've almost got a limiter, except you'd have zero-attack (or negative attack) with a limiter.

It also depends on the attack and how-frequently, and how-long, you are above the threshold. Just as an experiment you might try a much lower threshold to see if it behaves more like you'd expect.

I don't know how that compressor works but it looks like you've got the threshold set to about +15dB. If that's +15dBFS the compressor may not be doing anything...

That’s just how the SSL bus comp works. I once read an explanation from andy@cytomic but I forget now...I think it has to do with a soft knee for the higher ratio or something.
