Default The Reaper Project Bay: a file management disaster ?

Hi all,

I am doing some episodic TV composition this fall, so I am setting up my templates and workflow. Presently, I am looking at options for my Assembly and Mastering template, where I will be doing the music editing tasks, including managing stems for 24 episodes times 12 to 20 cues per episode.

As you can imagine, this would take some organisation - so, enter the REAPER PROJECT BAY. Yay! With its fairly straightforward lists, columns and even Folders to set up some bins, it seemed like a good option.

UNTIL...

I like to set up several folder structures:

01 BY EPISODE - where I put all the mixes for an episode
02 BY STYLE - so, all the ACTION cues will live in one folder, all the EMOTIONAL cues in another, etc
03 BY CHARACTER - so Brigitte has her series of thematic material, J.F. does, etc

So, I drag-drop my mixes from Reaper's Media Manager into the EPISODE 01 folder - great!

But then I drop the 4 BRIGITTE cues into the BRIGITTE folder - and they disappear from the EPISODE 01 folder!

WTF

Does anyone have:
- a work-around
- a tip / hint
- an alternative for managing/tagging/sorting/binning hundreds of media files over multiple episodes(Sound miner?)

I used to use SONY VEGAS for its excellent bin structure - but all development has stopped on it, and its unstable in its current version.

Help!
thanks...

T

Reaper allows up to 8 project bays. Can't you use one for one type of sorting, second for another type of sorting, etc.?

I think ED is right. Since projectbay supports only one layer of folders (no subfolders) and an item can only exist once (whatever the folder) in a projectbay, perhaps using multiple saved projectbays based on your different classifications will get you closer to the simplicity you are looking for. Items can easily exist in multiple projectbays at once and you can shuffle between bays or have multiple open and tabbed bays depending on how you like to work.

This is an excellent suggestion - thank you! I have implemented this as a work-around and think that I can achieve a nice compromise. The bin sorting structure in Reaper is nto *quite as flexible as within an assembly program such as Sony Vegas - but the filters are quite powerful, and the Comment field can be used for meta info as well. I would love to see a more flexible, multi-level-folder-type architecture in the Project Bay. For me, this is something lacking in Reaper as a post-production tool.

These are some extremely constructive suggestions. +1

One thing I would like to see is the ability to preserve item groups including relative positioning in the non-project bays.

Here's another annoying issue I have encountered that I'm hoping someone can help me with: whenever I switch between by Project Bays, the folder structure is collapsed. So, to see all my wonderfully sorted media, I need to click-click-click-click multiple folders *every time I switch.

Does anyone know how to keep the folder structure un-collapsed?

Thanx!

Here's another issue with the Project Bay: I can't drag-and-drop WAV files from my Bay to the timeline! I can drag and drop from Explorer - that works fine - but not from within Reaper.

These are 48kHz 24 bit files that were rendered using Reaper, so... I'm at a loss.

Google yields nothing.
Any suggestions?

I have posted a separate thread for this issue, here: http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.p...84#post1703384

Continuing with my (constructively critical) comments on the Project Bay - another annoyance is that the filter does not take into account the Meta Data of a file. So, if I have sound effects tagged as EXPLOSION, and search for "explosion" I don't see these files in the filter.

Am I missing a setting, or is Reaper not doing this as a feature?

Thanks again...

Great point ED, thanks ... I will add this to next User Guide update (it's sort of obscurely implied at the moment, but could do with being stated explicitly).

Magix didn't put Vegas on ice after they bought it, did they? V17 is out, not sure how current that is.
