Default Extending note in Midi Editor doesn't work when item extended with actions

I don't know if this is related to a Linux specific desktop problem, so i'll start here anyway.

I use two actions to extend either end of a midi item while in the midi editor. The problem is, when I use these actions, i cannot extend a note into the newly extended item region. The note extension only works if I extend the item with the mouse, so the actions are a bit pointless in this particular case. Not only that, the "action extended" item space doesn't accept any notes or indeed any data at all.

And additionally, I don't use looping at all, and when I use the actions to extend the item, then close the midi editor, and return to the arranger window, the two white triangles indicating the end of a looped item have appeared. I can extend the item manually to make them disappear, but that's another manual step.

Alex.

SWS extensions. Auto Color Layout. I have all my drums dark blue, Bass green...when I create a track and name it Bass it turns green automatically. You Find SWS on the frontpage under Resources.

It seems that it doesnt like if I activate auto layout option, then Reaper closes.

Ah. Well I think you want to report this as an SWS bug then: https://forum.cockos.com/forumdisplay.php?f=3 -- my bad, see cfillion's link below.

...make sure to explain the exact steps needed to reproduce the error, and specify reaper and OS versions.

Default Bar & Marker shifts when zooming

Hi
I'm running UBUNTU 18.04 with Reaper v5.975.

When I zooming with mouse wheel all markers and bar lines are shifting left from previous location initially placed at the beginning of sample transients. Creating tempo map is difficult cause I not sure where to place marker and which position is correct since different zoom level shows different position of sample transient.

thank you for fixing

PS: Why is attachment size limited to file size? It is difficult to create screen shot with this size

It's not the markers and grid lines that are moving, it's the peaks themselves. It's a known issue with wma files. Use a better and lossless format such as wav, WavPack or flac instead.

Default Higher DSP loads and xruns with large projects in recent Reaper versions

Hi,

the last days a loaded an older project that I made in November 2018. It uses only the Cadmium synth from LHI audio and some other plugins like EQs and stuff. During last November it played fine at a sample rate of 524 samples, but now I observed a lot of xruns and a quite fluctuating DSP load. The xruns increased drastically when browsing in Chromium or Firefox, while loading new pages, scrolling pages, etc. I checked everything from used plugin-in versions to IRQ priorities, used window compositor, etc., but what didn´ t test was Reaper itself.

This I did just now by downloading version 5.94 and the problem was gone to my big surprise. Much more stable DSP load and no xruns at all, even when browsing in parallel. I reproduced it several time to be sure and it was reproducible.

The problem seems to exist in at least 5.975 and 5.976 (I didn´ t test other versions yet).
It tried it under Debian Stretch with XFCE and Awesome as window manager.
I use Jack controlled by Cadence from KXstudio.

If you need more info, please let me know.

Want to test and tell us in what version the behavior changed?

I can do that later in the evening. This would be the next logical step. Hope I can figure ist out. Do you have any version in suspicion?

@Justin: The problems seem to start with version 5.962. I'm very curious what's the cause of it, especially because it's strongly affected by browsing.

5.96 fine
5.961 fine
5.962 not fine
5.963 not fine
5.97dev0222 not fine
5.97dev0223a not fine

Are any VST plug-ins being bridged? ( ps ax |grep reaper_host with the project loaded) -- 5.962 added support for bridging...

Otherwise: can you email a copy of the .rpp file to support at cockos dot com?

@justin: is this Windows VST bridging? I've always maintained that if users need to run Windows plugins, the best solution is to use Windows. (WINE - which I assume would be the basis for any Windows bridge - is an amazing project, but, has a history of being fragile with VSTs - and depending upon it so you can run old VSTs on Linux is likely to be fraught with problems - what *appears* to work can also just decide to suddenly fail without warning, and there's not much you can do).
Disclaimer: I've also spent about the last ten years or more involved in supporting (and encouraging others to) support Linux audio *natively* which is a far better option (and why its so great that Reaper also runs natively on Linux).

(I can completely imagine a scenario where someone will run Windows plug-ins in Reaper for Linux, on a Linux VM running on top of Windows... please don't let this happen...)

No, bridging/firewalling of linux VSTs (similar to how Windows VSTs are handled on Windows).

Yes I'd say that you are spot on with this.

So far reaper has no such builtin support, though I'd venture that properly implemented it has the potential to work quite well. IMO for the best result, it would have to be a native reaper implementation though.

Until there are some native Linux equivalents for things like Kontakt or Superior Drummer, I will be forced to use *some* Windows plugins.

That said, I've replaced almost all my audio plugins with native Linux VSTs. Last couple I want to get are Presswerks to replace PSP's Vintage Warmer and the only Overtone plugin I haven't bought yet is the AF2-10/M EQ.

I would do the same for VSTi instrument plugins but they don't exist unless you only need synthesizers for instruments.

Edit: the one and only exception to this is Pianoteq, which is the only native Linux VSTi I'm thinking about buying coz it's about the only one that isn't a synthesizer.

Me too, it feels way more like a real piano than any samples I've ever played..

I can also send the project if it helps.
Thanks!

That indicates that many plug-ins are being bridged, which is likely causing this issue.

To prevent this:
  • Open REAPER, close any open projects
  • Go to preferences/plug-ins/compatibility. Make sure that "VST bridge/firewalling" is set to "Automatic" or "Only native (disable bridging)"
  • Open the FX browser.
  • Choose the "All Plugins" tab, select all plug-ins, right click, choose "Run As->Default"

Thanks! It's working now . So no bug

edit: Ah, I forgot to ask why bridging plugins can cause xruns while browsing or opening programs. Are these bridges processes not running in realtime?

Default Reaper theme bug

I'm currently running the dark Logic Pro X style theme - but on Linux, there isn't a way to configure the dialogue window backgrounds / colour scheme independently to e.g. the main editor / mixer window. Which means I can either have a nice theme on the mixer / editor together with horrible file selectors (with white text on grey buttons - see screenshot). or the normal grey scheme, in the file selector and mess up the main theme. Is there any way this can be fixed?

UI elements on REAPER for Linux are styled using a separate theme file: libSwell.colortheme. See https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=210390.

Need to look into that, but yeah that might be the problem.

Yeah well, I don't want to turn this thread into a Wine discussion so I'll just say this.

Wine is never going to be 100% Windows, Windows keeps changing and Wine keeps trying to catch up and that's how it goes, and things like d2d1 are still not there in a usable way.

The DSP part of a Windows vst plugin is just Intel code which can be run on Intel processors, so do Wine critics have something against Intel code or is it the GUI part that they have something against where Wine has the most problems ie d2d1.

Wine is not Windows and therefore no one should expect any vst with a GUI to run at all and if they happen to run then ok.

The only reason Native Access and Waves Central are running (at the moment) with Wine is because of the fixes I submitted to Wine, otherwise hardly anyone seems to care and they and other things wouldn't run (they were left not running for years), so yes Wine does need fixes and Waves Central stopped working because of another Wine patch for cmd but I sorted that out and yes things can stop working because of some other Wine patch.

So for Wine vst's to run in an ok sort of way it would need a constant maintainer and fixer and Wine patch submitter to keep it all running ok, good luck.

Native Linux vst's are the number one choice but there is limited choice as everyone knows and developers are not flocking to Linux believe it or not as vst effects are mostly commercial (not all of them) but that's what vst mainly is, a platform by Steinberg to encourage commercial development and Steinberg has made VST3 development available for Linux and so far there hasn't been much resulting from it.

So IMO, running vst's using Wine is an optional extra and if someone can do what they want with native linux vst's then that's the way to go and no one should expect any vst to run with Wine but if they do then they might be useful to fill a gap not covered by Linux audio.

If I was trying to run a Windows game or Office on Linux using Wine then I would not expect them to run ok but if they happen to then ok.

The use of Wine for some Windows vst's is not going to stop Linux native vst's being preferred if they are available.

If there were native Linux vst's for things like sfzorando or powerdrumkit etc then they would be used and not the windows versions.

This is an old theme file I made a long time ago, not sure if it has everything in it, but maybe it can serve as a starting point: https://stash.reaper.fm/v/30510/libSwell.colortheme

Copy to: ~/.config/REAPER

Hope it's complete, I made it when it was a new feature on Linux. Maybe there have been some changes or additions that aren't in it. You could compare it to the stock /opt/REAPER one to see what might have changed.

It's really nice to have the rest of the windows themed too, especially if you use a dark theme

thanks for your statement osxmidi! I agree with what you say and think that the thoughts you mention point to the right direction, above all: rather develop native linux tools than to bridge "foreign" tools.

but how can we encourage people who write plugins in a non commercial fashion to also consider linux as platform? I mean, it's common to provide windows and mac os plugins likewise. and I ask myself, do all these developers own both a windows and an apple machine? and if not (what I believe is the case), where do they have the knowledge on how to modify their windows code to work in os x and vice versa?
the question for me, then, is: is there like a knowledge base or so which can be used as a guideline on how to adapt the plugin code also to linux? be it vst, ladspa or whatever plugin that natively runs in linux.

then we could not only ask these (private) developers if they would also consider to provide linux plugin formats but we could also point to helpful resources and say: look over here, it's not a big deal (hopefully! ), the steps are explained and there are others who might help you.

From a developers perspective:

As a commercial developer, I've been supporting Linux for the last ten years or more (I also implemented basic native Linux VST support for one of the most popular open-source Linux DAWs). Making plug-ins as an independent commercial developer is *just about* viable for me, at the moment, but, its expensive to do (if you want any hope of them running on anyone else's machine other than your own, then yes, you *do* need a Windows PC, Mac, and a lot of other equipment)

So persuading developers working in a "non commercial" fashion could be difficult - if you want people to work for nothing, and to invest in the tools to do so, then you get what you get - they have no more incentive to support the operating system or the feature set that you want than they do anything else - but many do use cross-platform toolkits such as JUCE which can make the job of porting existing code to Linux easier, if they decide they want to.

In your experience, is the dream of developing something on JUCE and being able to simply click "compile" and have plugins for every OS and plugin format a reality, or is it not quite so clean yet? I was toying with getting in to it but as a long-time Java coder have little patience for OS-level shenanigans. :-)

And a shout out to iplug2 as well.

And that's precisely what got me to purchase $159.87 worth of OverTone DSP plugins.

Had OverTone only offered Windows and Mac plugins, those sales would NOT have happened because I was replacing my Windows plugins with native Linux ones.

I don't use JUCE - so I can't say if that's the case. I think there's always going to be some 'tweaking' required, especially around Linux. I don't know what experience you have of programming other than java, but you will need C / C++ for realtime audio processing.

thank you, Mike, for sharing your perspective!

and I want to add that I didn't mean to say that developers should work for nothing. absolutely not. talking about developers working in a non commercial fashion I was just thinking of those people who do write plugins without being associated to certain companies (like e. g. helgoboss (helgoboss.org/projects/realearn/) or Евгений, the developer of ribs (kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=486995)), because I thought they would like the idea of including another popular platform rather than a company which has to work for profit. I may be totally wrong. views like yours can help to understand the situation better and, thus, maybe-hopefully to get in touch in favor of the common ideas.

and again: surely, I do not expect developers to work without being rewarded!

Default reaper crashes with u-he "triple cheese"

salut,

I experienced a series of reaper crashes using u-he's wonderful "triple cheese" synth plugin (linux vst). I tried different jack-settings but nothing changed.

I post the message from the log:

Code:
Process 15411 (reaper) of user 1000 dumped core.

Stack trace of thread 15433:
#0 0x00007fd5ea1ee7a6 n/a (/home/udaemon/.u-he/TripleCheese/TripleCheese.64.so)
I don't know if it's due to my system settings (antergos/arch linux x64 w/ stock arch kernel 5.1.3 PREEMPT, i5-6300U CPU @ 2.40GHz × 4, 8GB ram, rtprio set to 98) or if the problem lies within reaper (or my almost-stock configuration of reaper) or with triple cheese.

any hints are very appreciated. thank you!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: I'm still experiencing crashes, but they don't solely occur when I use u-he-plugins, but also with different (linux native) vst-synths like wolpertinger or vex and furthermore they are dependant on the plugin's settings.

if any of you have questions concerning linux native u-he plugins you might find help in their official linux-forum https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=292.

as for the mentioned reaper crashes I still don't know what to do except for avoiding certain plugin presets/settings and hoping it will not crash. the logs are not very helpful - at least to me.

maybe someone sees the problem having a look at the logs. therefor I post the usual messages of qjackctl concerning these crashes:

here, in the end it says there was a memory access error ("speicherzugriffsfehler"). everytime reaper crashes with a shorter or longer constant saw-tooth-noise.

are there further logs which I could check to get some more info?

thank you!

Default Autosave "when not recording"

I have the following configured:

Just now I've worked on tuning vocals with Melodyne, which I have running using LinVST. Sadly it crashed all of a sudden, so I wanted to restart Reaper and continue from the last autosave.

But despite those settings the last autosave was over 30 minutes ago.

Could it be that working within Melodyne is considered 'recording'?
If so, why?

Default scrolling faders and buttons

I don't know if this is a linux native reaper bug (or a bug at all) or has to do with the window manager one uses:

I figured out I can not scroll faders and button/knobs (with one exception!) with my mouse's scrolling wheel; I attach two images to illustrate what I mean.

this is not exhaustive since there are so many faders around that I can't collect all of them here.
remarkable is, I guess, that - so far - one knob can be adjusted mouse scrolling: the "wet"-setting of an fx as shown in the second image in the top right corner.

I'm using gnome 3.32 desktop under wayland.

can anbody confirm this?
