Default How to highlight a section of a track?

I know this must sound real novice but does anyone know how to highlight a portion of a single track without highlighting all of the tracks, something that should be so simple is bugging me.

Thanks, CJ

Welcome to Reaper forums.

You mean something like this ?

Reaper works a bit different, so not directly possible to make this kind of selection.
In Reaper selection is a combination of time selection (which is for all tracks) and track / item selection.

What are you trying to do exactly ?

Thanks.

I'm basically trying to edit a portion of my drum track & I can't figure out how to click and drag to highlight that portion without selecting all of the tracks. I think I'm just controlling the time selection like you said.

You need to both make the time selection and click on the item.
Then right click over the selected area of item and choose Split Item at Time Selection (or press Shift+S)
.

I don't remember if it is the default setting or if I did it, but in my Reaper you have to keep ALT pressed and right drag.

Then you can copy, move, cut, do whatever you want with that portion

There's a way to set up your mouse so that when the cursor is in the top half of the item, it behaves normally, i.e. select & move, and when it's in the bottom half you can drag/select a portion.

I've got mine set up this way but I can't remember now how I did it. If you're interested, I'll have a look at my settings and post them here.
