How to do?

Ok, this new skineable Icons seems pretty cool and I see a few people working on new themes with Icons. So can someone bring me up to speed so I can take a stab at it?

What do I need besides Reaper to change the Icons? What type of image format do I create the Icons in? Gifs? What steps do I need to do to put it all together?

I'd like to know as well. Perhaps a good tutorial or something. I've tried to make a couple of icons, but they don't seem to work in Reaper. I'm not sure why (color depth?).

I like the nice 3d ones like the Alpha theme icons. Someone mentioned doing it in Gimp, which I have. Anyway, any help is certainly apperciated.

Well, I have Adobe Photoshop and that's where I prefer to do image type stuff. So, I'm just wondering if you can use any image editor like Photoshop and then somehow import them into a Reaper theme. What is gimp doing that any other image editor not able to do? That's the part I'm not getting, so I'm still a bit confused. I don't really want to install Gimp, if I already have everything I need with Photoshop.

Photoshop won't open or save ico files, so you would need something like Gimp or an icon editor.

Gimp's the best free image editor is all, Red. I'm not sure it does .ico files either, although I could be mistaken.

You could use Gimp to open the ico file you want to modify and save as Targa or Tiff or any format that support transparency, then work on it in Photoshop since you're used to that environment. Or make the icon from scratch in Photoshop (need to be 16x16), then just use Gimp to convert to ico after, no need to learn a whole new program.

There's Irfanview who can open and save ico file, it's free also and it would make a nice companion to PS.

IconFX and IcoEdit32 seemed more targetted at this stuff than The Gimp, which has probably got a vastly longer learning curve. Probably depends how clever you are and how clever you want to be! (That's why I went for the simple stuff....)

I see it now, Gimp does save .ico files. My mistake.

Gimp definitely has a bit of a curve, but is very much a powerhouse.

IconFx is pretty sweet too, though.

Ok, I think I'm getting it now. Basically, I can create icons in any transparency supported format.....like PNG, Targa, Gif...etc. then open it in another image editor that will save to the .ICO format, since it seems like Photoshop doesn't support the ICO format. I just need to make sure my icons are in a 16x16 image size.

Now, do I just replace the icons located in the "default_ui" folder or do I create a new folder and somehow point Reaper to use those icons instead of the default ones?

Does anyone know if the ICO format allows animation? Like an animated GIF does? So I could create an icon with some animation? Thus, something like a blinking record light or mute buttons with a rotating disco ball :-)?

make a new folder for your icons

I have been copying the original then renaming it. In preferences color thmes you can specify per theme which button folder it loads up

Anyone want me to write a tutorial for The Gimp on how to create REAPER icons.

BTW, anyone here ever had a barotrauma? Sucks man!
