well, micro punches and micro editing on the scale of that "s" works good...

then you tweak the position, volume and crossfades until it sounds just right

it works

Hi Garrick. Top song and top thread, even if it hurts. No pain no gain eh?

I'm also a sucker for 'ambient/environment' sounds in a song, right back to the old stones songs I used to love, with studio door slams and conversations way way back in the mix.

So it's hard to know what technical things it's appropriate to treat and which are not., don't want to throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Thus I would say that mix 2 is missing a nice little plate/glass clink at the very end. It is better because you have brought some of the soft parts in the vocals.

Things I would look at next: Clean up (even out some loud/resonant notes mainly) the bass. Clean up some vocal plosives 'little Birds'. Also later on 'wake up sleePy head'. Use a dynamic high pass filter, you can set this up easily with two instances of ReaEQ on the same track. Easier still just automate the cut to those couple of spots.

Besides really nice lyrics and interesting harmonies, the simple guitar work is perfect and the piano works well. Drums are pretty good too.

Hey thanks Hamish, always appreciate your feedback.

Ahh yes the plosives, I should really add automation into my routine.

I'm off for the weekend so hopefully I come back with fresh ears

Thanks for the listens and comments everybody

the thing that worries me is that you'll resing it... for instance, I thought the second vocal on the real estate song wasn't as good as the first

when I said something like, "the words are the strongest part of the song", that included the delivery, the vocal...

that's why you should try to patch up this vocal

.

it's just that this has happened to me so many times... the first pass at the vocal was haywire, but even with the haywireness, it was more convincing than subsequent vocals

see what I mean?

ok, maybe the words are changing... "the first pass" is the first pass with new words --maybe sometimes just one word.. the word changes keep you pumped up

so if you got more words that are good enough to keep your enthusiasm up, record them...

...and you still have this version to fall back on

.

I tried to release a song - nothing happened. I tried to get some gigs - nothing. Soundcloud may be bad advertising... I don't know. I've had some listeners, some have been positive, but for the most part nothing. Who knows? If I'm not on the net, I might be able to get a gig. I thought it was the other way around, but there you have it. Must think of a new strategy.
