Default Small controls (Volume, Panning) sometimes behave erratic

Did anyone also make the observation that the small controls sometime behave a little bit erratic? When I click again on it usually it works afterwards, but sometimes small movements increase e.g. the volume to maximum:

This is on Ubuntustudio 20.04

No, smooth as silk here on both Ubuntu and Manjaro.

Are you sure it's not just a problem with your mouse (I've had problems in the past with cursors jumping around on screen because of a dodgy mouse)?

I'm using a Logitech MX Ergo trackball now with no issues at all.

Thanks! Maybe I got a hair in the sensor. No problems with the mouse so far.

Definitely something wrong. My mouse is fine, but the small controls sometimes become autonomous , e.g. the control is going to max, although I don't move the mouse. If there would be an issue with the mouse I should also recognize it somewhere else.

Here you see how it jumps from -L to +R for instance.

I exchanges the mouse and I get the same behaviour. Also tried an older version. In Bitwig everything is fine.

It sounds like there may be some kind of conflict going on (do you have any volume automation on the track, for example)?

If you don't find anything like that then I suggest you try a portable install with default everything (remember to create an empty reaper.ini file in your portable install folder before running REAPER). Then, in a new, blank project, just create an empty track and see whether or not you still see the same behaviour.

I opened a bug report here yesterday:

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread....06#post2503206

Could reproduce it on a different PC.

Just a thought...

Sometimes sensors like the one used in your mouse (I suppose it's optical?), are influenced by stray light from other sources.

Some software will ignore these stray impulses. In other cases, it might cause some stuttering, or even flipping to zero or maximum.

I've seen TL lighting affecting mice so badly they were unusable. And I've seen big electrical motors generate enough RFI to kill the mouse.

I'd bet it's software in your case, but it's worth trying another mouse, if you have one lying around?

EDIT: I wrote this before your last answer. Still, have you tried another mouse?

Yup, I tested three mice on two computers both running Ubuntu. I'll changed now the direction of the mouse movement as shown in the bug thread and see if that helps.

OK, never mind my reflections, then.

I found a way how to trigger it on two independent PCs:

go with the mouse arrow to the knob, press left mouse key and move the knob (quite wildly). Then release the mouse key and press it again quickly (!) while still turning the knob wildly. Some trials are maybe necessary as you sometimes loose the knob, but I can reproducibly trigger the strange behaviour with this method.

Is your mouse arrow also disappearing when turning the knobs? On the vertical faders it stays.

I can't reproduce it.

Same here, but iirc, this is the 'normal' behaviour, i always saw that.

It's tricky and does not always work. I'll test it on a MXLinux iso later.

I found the solution, at least it seems to be ok now.

Under preferences I activated the option "Use pen/tablet safe mode"

On Windows it's fine, but on Endeavour OS I got the same glitches.
