Default Aussicht auf Hoffnung

(Solo project with Guest on Alto Sax, while playing with the band was impossible.)

Title translated: "Expectation of Hope": Seeing the light in dark times....

-> https://www.bschnell.de/Aussicht_auf_Hoffnung.mp3

Live played solo parts:
- virtual Flute (keyboard and breath controller)
- real Alto Sax
- virtual Bari Sax (keyboard and breath controller)
- virtual Vibraphone (done using DEXED and Reaper effects with pin routing)

Comments:
- Flute starting as a 6/4 < depressed >
- then Flute 4/4 solo on a 6/4 base (same chord progression) < hopeful >
. now going on in straight 4/4:
- Sax solo (Alto and Bari) on a different chord progression < falling back in depression when remembering a certain event triggered by the final flute notes, then hope again >
- then Vib solo on the original chord progression <more hope and getting up >
- Coda as a set of winds (Bari / Alto / Flute) < here we are again ! >

-Michael

Smooth....nice combination of instruments. Smoky sax interlude almost had me lighting up again, after 20 years.

Very nice. I always dig shuffle grooves in 3 and 4!

Organic instrument sounds too, which I always like too.

Cool stuff dood!

Expectation of Hope: Nice jazz instrumental to listen to on a
rainy Sunday afternoon. My favorite thing is the saxophone
in the middle of this song. Very nice and airy mixed.

The sounds are beautiful and airy, without any congestion. And realistic!

My favorite part, too, is the sax solo in the middle, especially when it starts. Also, the drums sound "easier" in that part. Maybe this is the reason I find it more appealing.

One small structural suggestion, if I may? The bari added only for the ending seems a bit contrived. How about adding a little bari part from earlier on, so the listener gets accustomed, so to say? Some (flute?)/alto/bari background behind the vibes could be a good spot.

Congrats for a well done job!

I suppose that might ruin the airy and dancing character especially of the second Vib part.

The Sax player does support this idea.

Maybe a (rather short) Bari solo between the Vib part and the coda.

I suppose it needs a kind of Major feeling new chord progression.

Lets see...

Maybe enhancing the fast part of the Sax solo by some Bari licks here and there...
What do you think ?

The soloist is playing mostly in the low register, so the bari could interfere somewhat. Depending on the part, a few stabs here and there mught work though.

That's why I thought of the vibes solo at first - for maximum timbral separation.

Now I have a doubt: Maybe introducing the baritone earlier on is not that important after all? Listening to the tune again, the coda seems to work better than I felt at first. The presence of the three winds seems justified, not contrived anymore. It's probably just that I got used to it after listening repeatedly. Or have you updated the linked piece already?

No update yet. (I'll keep the original online for reference, when updating.)

The coda is supposed to be a bit "surprising". Maybe it's too much of that.

Maybe an approach the other way round could be nice, too: having the Vibraphone play along with the winds in the coda.

Right now I am just thinking about modifications / enhancements. Of course I'll post here if I uploaded a new version.

Tried this. Does not work. It really gets overcrowded.
Now trying to replace two sections of the second part of the Sax by an "answering" Bari....

I uploaded a new version.
Now the Alto and the Bari share the central solo.

Moreover I added compression, EQ and "space" to the Bari at the coda (same effects chain as with the solo), which makes the set a lot more well-balanced.

the new version is at the same place

the old version now is

Thanks and have fun,
-Michael

I think this version is the best yet.

The alternance between alto and bari introduces the "large cousin" in advance, which was needed for my ears to accept it in the finale/coda. Now it flows much more naturally.

Also the new processing sounds good. The added "space" is the most noticeable.

The lyrical start of the alto solo is still the piece's highlight for my taste.

All of the above is strictly IMHO of course.

Yep. Ulla, the sax player is a genius

The EQ on the Bari was rather drastic. The "space" is done by the free space360 plugin. I frequently use this, as IMHO it's perfectly realistic for solo instruments, captured with a single mic. Seems like dangerous to use it for multiple mics which feature some bleeding.
