Default NI VariComp Sidechain problem

Hi all,

I searched but couldn't find any threads addressing this particular problem, so...

I just got VariComp and was disappointed to find that a key UI element for sidechaining was missing in Reaper, whereas it shows up in Studio One, Cubase, Etc.

See attached photo, does anyone know how to get this panel to show up in Reaper?

Thanks in advance!

That's Studio One's sidechain UI for it's plugin frames.

In Reaper, you just need to send the track with the SC signal to channels 3/4 of the track with the compressor on it.

Reaper doesn't call it 'sidechain' because that implies a single signal path. Reaper allows each track to have a huge # of channels, any one of which could be a sidechain signal if so desired for any number of plugins.

So that is why you are not seeing terminology that matches Studio One but the function is still there.

To do this easily, click+drag the IO button of the SC track to the compressor track and a window will pop up called the IO routing window. At the bottom you will see Audio: 1/2 -> 1/2, change this to 1/2 -> 3/4 and you're good to go.

While you're wrapping your mind around this new paradigm, it may help to look into parameter modulation to help you understand why this channel routing system is important. You could have every track in your mix affecting a different parameter of a single plugin, for example. Electronic music really comes to life when the instruments interact like that.
